Mary, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Yes, I would hire me. I understand how confusing and overwhelming insurance can feel. My experience give me a deeper sense of empathy and a stronger motivation to guide people through the process with clarity and care.
As an insurance broker, I don’t just want to sell a policy — I want to sell education. To me, every sale is also a chance to show clients how their coverage works, why it matters, and how it protects them in real life. I believe in making sure people walk away not just with a policy, but with confidence and understanding. That’s the kind of broker I would want to hire — and that’s why I would hire me.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Mary Tait, the owner and founder of Midwest Choice Agency. I started this agency with a clear vision — to make insurance simple, personal, and meaningful. After experiencing firsthand how overwhelming the insurance process can feel, I wanted to create a place where people don’t just buy policies, but gain understanding and peace of mind.
At Midwest Choice Agency, I’m dedicated to educating clients, building trust, and making sure every person I work with feels protected and supported. This isn’t just business for me — it’s about helping my community make confident choices for their future.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
A moment that truly shaped how I see the world was experiencing the loss of very close family members and having to navigate insurance during those difficult times. Facing grief while dealing with claims and understanding policies made me realize how overwhelming and impersonal the system can feel when you need it most. I’ve also had to use insurance for other unexpected life events, and each experience showed me how vital it is to have someone who not only understands the policies but genuinely cares about the people behind them. These experiences inspired me to create Midwest Choice Agency — a place where education, empathy, and guidance come first, so clients can feel protected and supported through life’s toughest moments.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering has taught me things success never could. Losing loved ones, going through accidents, and facing life’s unexpected challenges showed me what it’s like to feel vulnerable and uncertain. Those moments taught me empathy, patience, and how important it is to have someone who truly cares. I carry those lessons into my work every day, helping people feel understood, supported, and protected when life feels overwhelming.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is the real me. I can be no other person — my trials, my tribulations, my life is real. I’m far from being a code-switcher; I love and embrace who I am, and that authenticity makes me better every day. Every challenge I’ve faced, every lesson I’ve learned, shapes how I connect with people and how I show up in the world — fully, honestly, and without pretense.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What will you regret not doing?
One of my biggest regrets is settling too early in my younger years, choosing careers that didn’t align with my true passions. I stayed in roles that didn’t reflect who I really was, just because it felt comfortable or expected. Looking back, I see how important it is to pursue work and life choices that truly matter, and to honor your own path instead of trying to fit into someone else’s idea of success.
