Alisha Shumake of Plymouth on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Alisha Shumake . Check out our conversation below.

Alisha , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Without a doubt, I would hire myself! Please know, I say that humbly. In my eyes, my job is not just a job. It’s a passion, an interest, and in some ways a hobby. I take my work seriously and am always researching new treatments and products so that I can bring my absolute best to clients. Hard work doesn’t scare me and I’m dedicated to my tasks.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m the owner of The More You Glow, a skin care service provider in Plymouth, MI. I’ve been in the esthetics industry for almost 18 years and worked in a variety of different roles before stepping into the world of entrepreneurship. I specialize in customized facial treatments and offer lash lifting, lash & brow tinting in addition to product consulting. I’m certified in Oncology Esthetics which is something I intend to focus on in the upcoming months.

Recently, I concluded an apprenticeship with a future esthetician. That was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had. It also renewed my knowledge and passion for the esthetics industry.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Young Alisha was a dreamer and planner with an active imagination who loved to meet new people, learn new things, and experience new places. I can say that the Alisha of today is exactly the same but with the confidence to put all that out into the world.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell young Alisha to relax, take a deep breath and trust in her motivation, determination, knowledge and skills. I spent so much time worrying if my goals would come to fruition when what I really needed to do was have trust and faith in myself.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
What a great question! Short answer: the current public version of me is the closest it has ever been to the real me.

See, when I started in esthetics it was not the industry it is now. I was told that I had to look a certain way, dress a certain way, act and speak a certain way to be successful. That led to a very solid line between the public and professional versions of myself. After many years, I started to crack and it was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain that separation, especially when I realized I didn’t need to hold on to that so strongly.

I always showed certain levels of my individuality because so much of my job is based on building relationships and I felt that clients deserved to see and get to know who I was and what I was all about. In recent years, I’ve let more and more of myself come through. I think that has a lot to do with growth – of both the esthetics industry and my own personal development.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Yes. I’ll be honest, getting recognition is nice. I don’t think most people would dispute that. However, recognition is not what fuels me. My own personal fulfillment at achieving my goals and turning my ideas into reality is what motivates me. It’s because of that I will always give everything my best.
