Today we’d like to introduce you to MATT & LISA WHELAN.
Hi MATT & LISA, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Our story begins in Milford, Michigan, Matt’s hometown, with a love for building and a love to serve others. Matt began his career in a small kitchen shop, where he developed a hands-on understanding of craftsmanship. He later worked as a framing carpenter, then a trim carpenter, and eventually became a superintendent. Even early on, he had a gift for seeing the big picture, what a space could become, and the drive to bring that vision to life.
Lisa has a background in interior design and a natural eye for detail, as well as a passion for creating spaces that feel welcoming. From the start, Lisa supported Matt’s vision and, over time, as the kids got older, became deeply involved in the day-to-day, wearing many hats and helping shape the company’s direction.
More than 30 years later, that dream has grown into an award-winning design-build company. At the heart of everything we do is our mission: to create beautiful homes with a passion to change lives.
We believe in designing and building homes that are not only functional and beautiful but that also bring people together. Whether it’s a kitchen where meals are shared or a great room where holidays are celebrated, we’re passionate about creating spaces where family happens.
One of our greatest strengths is the incredible team and culture we’ve built. Our designers, project coordinators, carpenters, and superintendents care about their work and the people we serve. They’re dedicated, talented, and bring a spirit of collaboration to every project. We couldn’t do this without them, nor would we want to.
We’ve come a long way from that little home office, but the core of who we are hasn’t changed. We still believe in listening first, serving with heart, and building lasting relationships along with beautiful homes.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like many in this industry, we’ve weathered our share of challenges over the years. Economic downturns, labor shortages, rising material costs, and supply chain disruptions have all tested us . Of course, covid brought an entirely new set of hurdles, but through it all, we stayed busy.
These experiences have made us stronger. They’ve pushed us to become more creative, more efficient, and more focused on building a team and a process that can thrive in any environment.
Any big plans?
Our plans for the future are rooted in growth, excellence, and customization. We’re working to become a world-class company; not just in the homes and renovations we deliver, but in the way we design, build, and lead. Our woodshop and design teams are rapidly expanding, allowing us to create even more fully customized spaces that reflect each homeowner’s unique vision, lifestyle, and needs.
We’re also deeply invested in our team. We’re not just building homes, we’re building leaders. We’re committed to pouring into our employees so that they grow into experts and innovators in their craft, each one contributing to our world-class standard. We believe our best years are ahead, and we’re excited for the continued momentum and impact that this growth will bring to M.J. Whelan.
