Today we’d like to introduce you to Debra Cagigal, Creator of Transformative Designs
Hi Debra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a creator who designs, builds, and transforms—not just spaces, but stories and mindsets. I specialize in transformative design: reimagining rooms, restoring furniture, and sharing the process with honesty and heart. As a digital creator and influencer, I bring my audience along for the journey—celebrating the wins, navigating the mess, and offering practical inspiration they can apply in their own lives.
My work lives at the intersection of creativity, community, and purpose, and I’m passionate about empowering others to start their own creative journeys.
I blend woodworking, interior styling, and DIY ingenuity to craft spaces that feel personal, purposeful, and a little unexpected. My work is hands-on and shaped by curiosity, collaboration, and a deep love for learning. I don’t aim to be bold—I aim to be intentional, creative, and inspiring. Whether I’m building something new or telling the story behind it, my hope is to empower others to explore their own creative path and see possibility in the everyday.
My passion for DIY goes way back, sparked by the quiet creativity I saw in my mom as she designed and cut wood for her projects. That early inspiration planted a seed that eventually grew into something life-changing.
I’m married to my biggest cheerleader, Alex, and together we’ve raised four incredible children—each one part of the sounding board behind my projects, ideas, and designs.
After spending years in IT, sales, and marketing, I stepped away from the corporate grind to be home with my family—and that’s when my creative spark reignited. I started by flipping furniture, experimenting with builds, and teaching myself the rhythms of working with my hands. One day, while renovating our basement, I stumbled across some gorgeous black walnut and built three high-top tables from it. That was the moment I knew: I was meant to create.
Now, DIY is more than a hobby—it’s my way of life. I wake up excited to tackle a list of builds that enhance our home and the spaces of our family and friends. But just as much, I spend time admiring and applauding the work of other makers. Scrolling through social media, I’m often cheering from the sidelines—leaving comments, getting inspired, and connecting with creatives I admire.
I’m a proud self-taught builder. I learn by watching, asking questions, making mistakes, and figuring it out one step at a time. That’s why sharing the process—flaws and all—is so important to me. Because maybe, just maybe, someone else will see it and feel ready to start too.
It’s never too late to take a new path—and I’m so glad to be here, sharing my journey.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My DIY journey always begins with a quiet kind of intensity; hours spent thinking, sketching, and designing before I ever pick up a tool. Even after more than 20 years as an IT professional, there’s something grounding about putting pencil to paper. I still love to draw—not just to visualize my builds, but to explore the process creatively, step by step.
One of my biggest challenges is time. My decisions don’t always come quickly, and my builds are shaped by slow, intentional problem-solving. I move at my own pace—but that pace isn’t always compatible with the demands of social media.
The algorithm feels like a wave I haven’t quite caught yet.
And some days, I feel the weight of imposter syndrome. I see what others are building, posting, or achieving, and I wonder if I’m measuring up. Am I doing enough? Am I inspiring anyone?
But even with those doubts, my goal stays the same: enjoy the process, use my mind and hands to create, to empower and encourage. I want people to see my process, imperfections and all, and feel like they can begin their own journey—just like I did.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
From sketch to sawdust, each project I build carries heart and purpose. Whether I’m designing custom furniture, reimagining entire rooms, renovating forgotten corners, or experimenting with new materials and building techniques—my goal is always the same: to fuse creativity with function.
I specialize in creating beautiful, functional spaces with heart and intention. Whether it’s a full-room redesign—from lighting and accenting walls to the perfect finishing touches that often includes a customized build or two—or reimagining vintage pieces with personal history, I try to bring creativity, effort, and care to every project.
I’m hands-on with every build, from original designs to inspired recreations. I’m not afraid to experiment—new styles, techniques, tools, or formats—I’ll try anything once (and maybe five times if it helps me learn something new).
One of my greatest joys is reviving old furniture—like the hundred-year-old dining set that belonged to my grandmother. That project reminded me why I do this: to honor stories, create beauty, and make something meaningful with my own two hands.
These aren’t just DIY projects. They’re chapters of a story—told in woodgrain and grit—delivered on social platforms meant to inspire others to build with intention. Empower someone else’s journey

Who else deserves credit in your story?
Every build is my own handiwork—but the style magic, That’s a team effort. I rarely get hands-on help with the actual build, but I do lean on my in-house design crew, ACD Design Team, for creative input: my two amazing daughters, my future daughter-in-law, and a close friend of my son who feels like family. Together, they help me weigh in on colors, lines, proportions, and all the details that take a project from good to gorgeous.
They’re not just stylish—they’re smart, collaborative, and always ready to cheer me on (or challenge my design instincts in the best way). The tools may be in my hands, but this team helps shape the heart behind every piece.
Also, the creator community on social media has been a huge part of my growth—personally and creatively. It’s a space where inspiration flows freely, where makers generously share ideas, tips, and behind-the-scenes moments that push me to keep learning and experimenting. Whether I’m stuck on a technique or second-guessing a design choice, there’s always someone willing to answer a question, offer encouragement, or cheer me on. That kind of connection is what fuels my passion and reminds me that we’re all building something bigger than ourselves.
