Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Johnston.
Hi Nicole, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
When I first created The Dish Next Door back in 2019, it was a hobby and just for fun. I loved reading other blogs and one day had thought how amazing it was for individuals to share their own flavors and experiences. It inspired me to start my own page after witnessing the beauty of positivity. Now, I’m a part of it as well. My only goal was to share recipes from my dinner table to others that came across my website, and it still is. Then after having my daughter in 2023, it became a full-time job, and I’m enjoying every second of it. Almost every day I am in the kitchen experimenting while my husband volunteers to taste test, and my daughter loves to occasionally help as my mini chef too. It’s honestly an incredible feeling being able to connect with other people from all over the world, along with inspiring each other to create new meals for themselves and their families.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not, haha. I wish I could say it has been, but there have definitely been a few hiccups along the way due to my own procrastination and mental health journey. When I first started food blogging, I didn’t know the first thing about creating a website. The software and knowledge to developing one is mind-blowing, and researching into it and watching a dozen Youtube videos didn’t always cookie cut the instructions out for me. I ended up having to reach out for help and it was the best decision. I also struggled with a few personal matters that caused me to take a pause on blogging for a while, leading to lack of content and motivation. It was disappointing, but I had to keep reminding myself that I can only handle what I could control and that my health is more important. My stories weren’t going anywhere and neither was my website. It took me a few years to get back on track, but it’s paying off. I’m more focused than I have been in years, and I’m proud of where I’ve been able to lead myself because of taking the time off.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I share budget-friendly recipes for couples and families that want to make simple yet convenient meals either during the busy work week or on a relaxing weekend. My recipes range from using common household ingredients to occasionally splurging on a nice menu for the weekend. When creating recipes, I am constantly keeping in mind what is practical to make after a long day. Sometimes I don’t want to chop or mince a bunch of produce. Sometimes I’m too tired or possibly sick with a cold to prepare a meal, which is why I try to think of freezer-friendly options with my content too. Other times, I want to add something extra and try a new spice or ingredient I haven’t had before. I’m not a fancy cook, but I always make sure the dishes I develop are ones that I want to keep in rotation and ones that my family will love. I’m sure that’s how it is for many people, which is why I share meals that they could enjoy with their families as well that doesn’t take a lot of work but will still taste delicious. I also create recipes for pets, specifically treats or biscuits that are great for sensitive stomachs. I’m an animal lover, so I’m always making something for my pets . After all, making and baking memories can be a part of our childhoods with all of our loved ones.
I’m not exactly sure if I’m known for it, but my pet-friendly dog cake recipe is one of my most popular recipes on The Dish Next Door. It almost went viral when I first posted it back in 2020 and it’s still searched for to this day, along with a recipe on how to brine corned beef.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
To not demand too much from yourself. Only work with what is in your control, not what isn’t. And to slow down and have fun. Since having my daughter, I’ve learned that it’s okay to go at my own pace and to not try catching up with the latest trends or set unrealistic expectations. The whole point of why I started what I have is to enjoy what I do. I’ve also learned that sometimes you take notice in friends becoming strangers and strangers becoming your biggest supporters when going for an opportunity to grow yourself, and that’s okay. I am my biggest supporter and that’s enough for me to believe in myself and keep moving forward. So don’t be afraid to push yourself to your full potential.
