Rising Stars: Meet Jessica Terranova of East Grand Rapids

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Terranova.

Jessica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey into photography started in the world of blogging. Back in the heyday of blogging, I was loving life showcasing my unique finds in front of the camera. Then at a blogging event I wound up having the opportunity to photograph some influencers, a few of whom are now household names. It was during that time that I realized I preferred being behind the camera rather than in front of it, and my passion for photography grew from there.

After a wedding, two kids, and seeing my camera collect dust, I decided it was time to dive back into my love for photography. I traded in my old kit lens for some upgraded gear, and I haven’t looked back since. Now, a little over a year later, I specialize in family photography, always aiming to capture that perfect, timeless shot. I’ve also had the privilege of working with some incredible businesses in Grand Rapids, creating branding sessions that truly capture their essence—those have quickly become some of my favorite projects.

On the side, I have been loving my boudoir clients. Allowing women to see themselves as their most beautiful, bold, and authentic selves has been nothing short of empowering. There’s something incredibly special about helping women embrace their confidence and beauty through the lens, and it’s a truly rewarding experience for both me and my clients.

I’m excited to continue growing in this craft and telling stories through my lens.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to where I am now hasn’t been a straight line, but life would be boring if it was! Looking back, I realize I didn’t always listen to my creative side or trust that photography could be something more than just a hobby. There were moments when I doubted it, and I wish I would have embraced that passion sooner. But I’m grateful for the winding path—it’s led me here, and now I can fully pour myself into this craft that’s always been a part of me.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc.?

I primarily specialize in Family & Lifestyle Portrait photography, capturing those perfect, timeless shots for clients and families to cherish for years to come. I also work with local businesses on branding-style sessions, which have quickly become some of my favorite projects. In addition to those, I absolutely love working with clients who request boudoir sessions.

What are you most proud of?

I’m most proud of how far I’ve come in trusting my creative side and turning my passion for photography into a growing business. Looking back, I realize I should have embraced this path sooner, but I’m proud to have finally stepped into it. What I’m most grateful for, though, is the chance to show my two daughters that you can do it all. Being a stay-at-home mom has always been my top priority, but having my photography business allows me to show up for myself, too. It’s incredibly rewarding to balance both and set an example of pursuing what lights me up.

What sets you apart from others?

What sets me apart is my approach to photography: naturally posed with true-to-color edits. I focus on creating images that are authentic, capturing the natural beauty of each scene. My style emphasizes clean, classic poses that highlight the genuine emotion and personality of my clients while staying true to the colors of the moment. I avoid heavy editing or color alterations that could distort the authenticity of the subject, and I steer clear of presets and filters that can drastically change the overall look of an image. The result is a collection of timeless, vibrant photographs that feel real and will stand the test of time!

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
One surprising fact many people might not know about me is that before becoming a wife, mother, and freelance photographer, I worked full-time as a nanny. My love for children shaped my daily life, and being a nanny allowed me to travel and experience things few are fortunate enough to. It was during these experiences that I discovered my passion for photography. I loved capturing moments with the children I cared for and giving their parents precious memories to look back on. Childhood goes by so fast, and knowing I played a part in preserving those memories reassures me that I’ve been on the right path all along. Today, I’m grateful to express my creativity through photography in a way that feels completely true to who I am.
