Today we’d like to introduce you to Niki Platz.
Niki, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After spending 17 years as a stay-at-home mom to our four amazing kids, Connor, Carson, Ally, and Abby, I knew that when the time was right, I wanted to return to work in a way that aligned with my personal passions. Before becoming a SAHM, I worked as a cosmetic retail manager after obtaining my Bachelor’s Degree from Western Michigan University. Skincare had always been something close to my heart—my own struggles with acne as a teenager sparked a lifelong interest in skin health and confidence.
Once our kids were more independent, I felt a strong pull to become a licensed esthetician. I enrolled at the Douglas J Aveda Institute and earned my license in 2022. After gaining experience in the field, I realized I wanted to open my own business creating a space that combined expert skincare with a modern, approachable vibe—something fresh for Kalamazoo. That’s when I discovered Oasis Face Bar, a skincare franchise that started in Ohio in 2020. With incredible support from my husband, Tyson Platz, who runs VRT Enterprises, Inc. and owns A Restroom Trailer Company (ART), I opened my own location of Oasis Face Bar in December 2023.
Oasis Face Bar is more than just a business to me—it’s a reflection of everything I’ve learned, loved, and worked for over the years. It’s where passion, experience, and purpose came together.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road—but I think the challenges have made the journey that much more meaningful. Being out of the workforce for 17 years came with its own set of hurdles. I had to rebuild my professional confidence and adjust to how much had changed, not only in the industry but in the way people do business today.
Opening my own business was a big leap of faith. It was a risk—financially, emotionally, and professionally—but it was also deeply fulfilling. One of the biggest early challenges was choosing the right market. Thankfully, I found a supportive and welcoming community in Kalamazoo, and I’m so grateful for the incredible clients who have embraced Oasis Face Bar.
Balancing the demands of running a business while still being present for my kids, especially with some still in school, has been one of the hardest parts. Some days I feel like I’m crushing it, and other days, like I’m barely keeping it together. I’ve also had to learn how to be a boss. Creating boundaries, building a healthy team culture, showing up as a leader—it’s all been a growing process, but one that’s pushed me to become better in every way.
The struggle has made the success that much more meaningful.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think risk is something most people try to avoid, but for me, stepping into risk is what allowed me to grow. Opening Oasis Face Bar was hands down the biggest professional risk I’ve ever taken. I was coming off a 17-year break from the workforce, had recently gotten my esthetician license, and decided to jump straight into launching a business. There were so many unknowns—financially, emotionally, logistically—and it would’ve been easier to play it safe. But I kept coming back to this feeling that if I didn’t try, I’d always wonder “what if.”
I don’t necessarily see myself as a natural risk-taker, but I do believe in listening to that internal nudge when something feels aligned, even if it’s scary. To me, risk is about believing in your vision even before you have all the answers. It’s trusting yourself to figure things out as you go—and being okay with the discomfort that comes with that. The risk was real, but so was the reward. I’ve grown in ways I never expected, and I’m proud of the example I’m setting for my kids about betting on yourself.
