Rising Stars: Meet Michelle Walters of Ypsilanti

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Walters.

Hi Michelle, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Arcane Expressions was born at a pivotal point in my life—a time when I found myself yearning for something deeper, something truer. After years of setting my creativity aside, I felt a quiet but undeniable pull to reconnect with the part of myself that had always spoken through making. The very first piece I created after that long silence was a single necklace. Small, simple—but it carried a spark. A flicker of magic I hadn’t felt in years. That spark became a flame.

I’ve always been drawn to the gothic, the witchy, and the magical—forms of expression that felt like home to my spirit. As I crafted pieces that reflected my inner world—dark, beautiful, mysterious, and full of magic—I realized that this wasn’t just art. It was healing. Empowerment. A way to give voice to the mystical parts of myself that had long been quiet. That first necklace soon led to gothic Victorian chokers, hats, and ornate headdresses. What began as deeply personal expression became something I felt called to share.

In the early days, I made pieces for friends. Then I took a leap—registered as an LLC, began vending at local art markets, and connected face-to-face with people who felt drawn to the energy in my work. From there, doors opened. I began to sell in a couple of local shops, took part in larger events and alternative markets, and expanded into creating gothic, witchy, and magical apparel.

But the deeper roots of Arcane Expressions stretch far beyond my business journey. Since childhood, I’ve been a maker—a self-taught artist enchanted by textures and treasures, guided more by instinct than instruction. Sewing, costume-making, crafting jewelry—it was always a way of speaking when I didn’t have the words. In my early twenties, I sold handmade necklaces at markets, not yet knowing that these moments were threads in a much larger tapestry.

It took time. Seasons of searching, of loss and growth, of becoming. Life stretched me, softened me, and taught me to listen closely to the quiet voice within. Somewhere in that unraveling, I began to hear the call to create again. Only now, it came with purpose. With power. With a sense that all I had lived through was asking to be transformed—into beauty, into art, into something sacred.

That’s when Arcane Expressions truly came to life—not just as a brand, but as a reclamation. A sanctuary. A living embodiment of everything I am: the dreamer, the maker, the survivor, the mystic. Through every piece I create, I weave in story, soul, and intention—offering not just an object, but a connection to something deeper.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Building Arcane Expressions has been a journey filled with both enchantment and challenge. There was no roadmap—just a deep desire to create from the soul and share something meaningful with others. I’ve taught myself everything along the way: how to shape raw materials into wearable spellwork, how to price with care, and how to stand confidently in my own light at markets and events.

One of the hardest parts has been moving through self-doubt—the quiet moments where I wondered if there was space for my kind of magic. Balancing creativity with everyday life, staying inspired while managing burnout, and learning to trust the timing of it all has been part of my personal unfolding.

Right now, I’m still growing this brand. I work a full-time job while nurturing Arcane Expressions during late nights, weekends, and every moment in between. It’s a labor of love, and a true act of devotion.

I’m also in the process of building a stronger online presence—a way to share this magic with those who resonate beyond my local markets. It’s not perfect, but it’s authentic. Every piece I create, every soul I meet, every step I take is part of a bigger vision.

Arcane Expressions is still becoming—and so am I.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Arcane Expressions is a growing brand rooted in magic, transformation, and self-expression. My work blends fantasy and fashion, light and shadow, pulling from the darker corners of beauty and the power of the unseen. I specialize in handcrafted accessories and wearable art, everything from headdresses and gothic jewelry to gothic and witchy gowns and outfits.

I’m self-taught, and every piece I create is infused with deep intention. I don’t just make things to be worn—I craft objects that feel alive, like they carry their own story or spell. Whether it’s a spiderweb lace dress or a carved crown, I want my work to awaken something in the wearer… a connection to their inner magic.

What I’m most proud of is building this from the ground up with nothing but a dream and sheer determination. I had to teach myself everything—from sculpting and sewing to pricing and presenting at markets. Every challenge I’ve faced has shaped the brand into what it is today: raw, real, and always evolving.

What sets Arcane Expressions apart is its soul. This isn’t fast fashion or mass production. Every piece is made with heart, with a deep sense of symbolism and emotion. I’m not just selling products—I’m creating portals for people to step into their own magic, to embody the stories they carry within.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is authenticity—staying true to who I am, what I create, and the energy I bring into the world. I believe that when something is made with intention and heart, it carries a kind of magic that people can feel. That’s what I strive to put into every piece I design: realness, ritual, and meaning. I want people to feel empowered when they wear Arcane Expressions, to feel seen, and to reconnect with parts of themselves they may have forgotten—whether that’s their mystical side, their creative spirit, or their inner strength.
Sharing that magic with others is deeply important to me. It’s not just about making something beautiful; it’s about creating something that reminds people of who they are and what they’re capable of. That’s the “why” behind everything I do—because I know how powerful it is when someone feels connected to their true self, and I want to help others tap into that power through art, expression, and adornment.
