Rising Stars: Meet Madelaine Glowicki of Traverse city

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madelaine Glowicki.

Hi Madelaine, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We have been dancing together our whole life, Veronica Wurm and I, who run Design Dance Company. We wanted to start something based on what we enjoyed so much about dancing as kids; artistry, personal growth, and the ability to work hard and see improvement from year to year. As a physical therapist, I was really interested in training dancers in a way that keeps them strong in a well-rounded way. As a choreographer, Veronica was really interested in training dancers in an artistic way that helped build a strong foundation for their own choreography and feeling comfortable in their own skin.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Any owner would tell you that starting a new business is challenging. I think finding our own identity, setting our own benchmarks, and establish how we uniquely wanted to operate were the hardest parts. We love what we do, and setting out on your own can be really intimidating. I think by year five we found a confidence and groove to better handle future obstacles, because they don’t go away, we just get better at navigating them.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work is based on strength and movement based on each dancer’s individual gifts. Dance can be very selective for certain traits and attributes, and I appreciate a more dancer specific approach, helping each kid shine within the body they were given. Veronica’s work is challenging, dynamic, and gives each dancer the opportunity to develop and connect to their their own musicality and artistry, truly feeling comfortable in their own skin. We are proud of the atmosphere inside the studio and the self-confidence we nurture. We are truly committed to making every dancer feel empowered and confident, connected to their art and graduating from our program and bringing those skills into wherever they end up.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
There are always trends, and as a studio that attends 1 or 2 dance conventions a year, we see those trends come and go. I think the industry right now is leaning into celebrity choreographers and trick-centered training. While that may work for some studios, we are remaining steadfast in our strength before skill and personalized choreography approach.
