Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Fricke.
Hi Kara, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey into barbering started when I moved to Denver at 17, fresh out of high school. Like most teenagers, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I had all these interests—art, science, fashion—and even daydreamed about becoming a special effects makeup artist for horror movies. But college felt overwhelming because I couldn’t pick just one path, so I decided to buy myself some time and enrolled in beauty school in November 2012. It was meant to be a backup plan, but quickly became something I was really passionate about.
While I was there, I noticed most students avoided men’s cuts, I figured, why not? I’ve always been the type to dive headfirst into challenges, so I ended up doing a lot of men’s cuts and found I enjoyed them. Conversations came naturally, probably because I grew up with three older brothers. I could connect with them easily because I talked about things I already loved, like my favorite bands, video games and vintage cars.
When I graduated, I took the first salon job I could find. It was a high-end blow-dry bar—white marble, chandeliers, the works—I felt totally out of place, it just wasn’t my scene. And honestly I found typical salon work kind of boring, I missed the more complex men’s cuts.
Determined to find my fit, I started interviewing at barbershops. Back then, female barbers were rare, and I didn’t have much experience, so most places weren’t interested. But one shop, run by two Russian brothers, called me for an interview. The older brother, Semion, sat me down and asked me why I wanted to work at a barbershop. I was completely honest with him—I didn’t have much experience but was eager to learn and passionate about becoming a barber. Something about my truthfulness convinced him to give me a shot.
He offered me the job on a deal: I had 90 days to learn everything he knew, or I’d be out. Days were spent shadowing him, and nights were for practice—sometimes until 2 a.m. Semion didn’t just teach me barbering; he shared life lessons that I carry with me to this day. He emphasized that time is the most valuable thing that we can give and believed his shop should be an inclusive and welcoming place— For all.
It wasn’t easy. Semion used to joke that I was his most difficult student— a polite way of calling me a slow learner. But he also told me that I was fearless. Eventually, everything clicked, and I was cutting everything from skin fades to flat tops with confidence. Those years under his mentorship shaped me not just as a barber but as a person.
I worked there for a few years, but by 2016, I was ready for a new challenge. I moved to Grand Rapids and started working at local barbershops. Unfortunately, I found the same problem everywhere: a focus on profits over people. It was frustrating to see shops prioritize packing chairs or upselling products instead of building real connections with clients.
In June 2024, I decided it was time to create something new—a space that reflected everything I love about being a barber. I opened my private barbershop suite with one goal: to challenge the standard barbershop experience. I wanted to create something more personal, elevated, and entirely client-focused—a space where every person in the chair feels valued and cared for. It’s about more than just haircuts; it’s about connecting with people and crafting an experience that’s as unique as they are.
This industry has shaped who I am, and I feel lucky every day to do what I love while building real connections with the people in my chair.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been anything but smooth. But honestly, that’s part of what makes this industry so rewarding. Like many barbers, I’ve dealt with being overworked, undervalued, and underpaid. There’s often this expectation to sacrifice your time and energy to meet high quotas, all while feeling like your worth is tied to how much you can produce in a day.
The thing is, nobody gets into barbering just for the paycheck. We do it because we love the connection—the one-on-one moments with clients that make the work meaningful. Unfortunately, many shops bank on that passion, knowing we’ll give everything to our craft, even at our own expense. It’s a hard truth in this industry, if you don’t value yourself, someone else will set your worth for you—and it won’t be enough.
The good news is, when you take that power back, set your own standards, and put your heart into your work, the right clients and opportunities will always find you.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
To put it simply, we’re a small, local, private barbershop — and our focus is you. Just you. Sure, you can expect a great haircut, because that’s the baseline. I’ve spent over a decade honing my craft, learning different techniques, working with all kinds of hair textures, and keeping up with evolving trends. I personally have a soft spot for curly hair, but I’m just as comfortable delivering a sharp fade, a crisp lineup, or a defined beard trim. Every now and then, I’ll throw in some fun color or hand-painted designs — though I get that might not always fly at the office.
What really sets us apart is the genuine time, attention, and care we put into every visit. I wanted to break away from the typical barbershop routine — none of that turn-and-burn feel from corporate chains, and no pressure sales pitch like some high-end spots. Honestly, I’m proud of having the guts to start this on my own and challenge the usual way things are done.
This shop is built on connection. Grand Rapids is growing fast, but I believe people still want something real — not just another business model polished and presented with a new shiny bow. Building this place alongside my clients has been one of the most rewarding parts of it all. More than anything, I want people to know there’s a spot here that values face-to-face connection and self-care that’s actually worth investing in.
Call me crazy, but I believe what I offer is more than just a haircut.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I’ve already mentioned my original mentor, Semion, who set me up right with solid skills and a hardened skin to handle whatever comes my way. A huge shoutout also goes to my new comrade, Tiffany, who joined the shop back in December. At first, I was on my own—partly because I felt like I was the last one who saw things the way I do. Tiffany’s been a longtime friend and has been the perfect addition to the shop. She genuinely cares about every person who walks through the door. Another big thank you to my sister, Krista who helped me pull my shop together and kept my head on straight while decorating and curating the design of the shop.
Ultimately, the success of my business is directly tied to my clients. Their support has been incredible — in just a year, I’ve already gathered nearly 200 reviews, and that number keeps growing. This shop isn’t just a sanctuary I created for myself to escape the toxic environments so common in this industry—it’s a home I built for my clients, too. Every moment shared here, every haircut, every story, every burst of laughter, has been part of something bigger than me. This space is shaped by the community, for the community, and it’s become so much more than I ever dreamed. My heart is absolutely overflowing with gratitude, pride, and love for what we’ve built together. It’s not just a shop—it’s a testament to what can happen when people come together with kindness, trust, and a shared vision. I’m humbled and honored to be a part of it, and I carry that with me every single day. From the bottom of my heart, Thank you.
