Today we’d like to introduce you to Samuel “Metz” Metzler.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started music in 2011 with my first band Aim Your Arrows. Beginning as a bassist, I played with them for about 5 years. Toured around the mid west, released 2 EP’s played a day of Warped Tour on the Shira Girl stage and made a lot of friends and memories along the way. After that ended in early 2015 I manifested Evergreen. For those 5 years I was the bassist and backing vocals for Far From Fiction and Wanderer. Gaining more experience and knowledge to put to use one day. After leaving Glass Hearts in 2023 I committed to Evergreen full time.
Having the creative freedoms and liberties I had a wide array of sounds to contribute to what I’ve had in my head over the years. The memories of times on the road and friends coming to visit. Times gone by but never truly left. Growing up in Metro Detroit all my life i’ve been exposed to a vast mixture of music and sounds that’s sometimes impossible to escape. That and Gorillaz were two big influences on this project and with that I was able to put out my EP “Free Reality” last January. Since then I’ve recruited Val as my drummer and so far have played a couple cool places around Detroit like The Loving Touch and The Blind Pig.
Were working on more music right now and getting into more Shogazzy / Fast Pace stuff to tell some more crazy and compelling stories. We’re just hungry to play live and our goal is to play St. Andrews Hall in Detroit in the future. Till then, it’s just more romaing through that vast reaches of our mind and subconscious.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being this early there have only been a few struggles. For one, Myself (Metz) was looking for a drummer for well over 2 years until I finally met my current drummer Val! I played my very first show solo and that’s where I met her, so fate was good to me that night. Second has been doing a band by yourself. Evergreen is composed of two members myself (Metz) and Val. I do the booking, songwriting, merch, art, literally everything and Val is there to help out. I have a vision for what I want to do with this project but it is a little stressful sometimes.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve been doing art all my life and I specify in a few different fields. Drawing, Painting, Watercolor, Vector Art, Sometimes just messing around with wood David Lynch style. I’ve just always been a creative soul all my life and just have a strong connection to art as a whole. Be it music, film, poetry, you name it, I’ve had a strong appreciation and admiration for the art world. I’ve looked up to a lot of people from Ralph Steadman, Jamie Hewlett, A lot of artists from Mad Magazine, Matt Greoining, Todd McFarland, Picasso. I’m a huge fan of artist who find a way to break the real of our reality and show another in theirs be it emotional, sounds or the best they can interpret from their own imagination.
How do you think about luck?
It’s mainly a mixture of both good luck and bad luck. I had a very challenging childhood of losing my dad at 13, not really having a good relationship with my brother. Did really bad in school and was a huge outcast with everyone except a small group of friends and just felt directionless for a good portion of that life going into my 20’s. There’s always going to be challenges through out life, instead of letting that stuff get to me I just channeled it into being creative. I’m a huge introvert so it just gave me fuel to do something with my time turning it into good luck.
