Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Mequisedec Ramos.
Joseph Mequisedec, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up, I always had a creative mind and the idea to do more, however, I didn’t know how it would help me in my life. After graduating high school, I decided to go to work in a factory and soon realized I didn’t want to do that for the rest of my life. I went to college after a year and started to look around different career paths. As I was searching, I always had this idea of one day making a epic netflix style series and I knew I had to start somewhere. So, I joined a film club in Grand Rapids Community College and learn the basic of filmmaking there, but I wanted to learn and do more.
I decided to make a short film by myself and after completing it, I feel in love with the process and art. I began to make more solo short films and eventually enrolled in Grand Valley State University for their film program. After graduating GV, I went back to working in a factory because I couldn’t find a job in my field due to my introverted self. After a year, I decided to break out of that slowly and reach out to production companies around town and little by little, I was invited to some great companies. Within a couple of months, I stated my freelance work.
From there, I started to pay attention to how these production companies ran their businesses. I would ask questions and learn. My passion has always been to hold a camera and record, but I wanted to challenge myself and start my own production company.
In 2022, I started Ramos Media 616 and started to send cold emails, cold walk ins, and do free work for small businesses. It was much harder then I thought and it still is, but I kept pushing.
As of today, I manage to get a couple of clients under my company, planning and making their ideal video for their business and organizations. It is still a challenge but I love every process of it and am constently trying to learn more.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s has not been a smooth road, and at time, it’s still not. My main struggles are on the business side. I did not go to school for business or took any class for it. However, on my journey to learn and connect with other individuals like me, I manage to meet people and friends that have mentored, guided, and shown me some knowledge on the way. With a field like this where there is so many competition, it good to see that there are people willing to help others through experiences they have also been through.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I would consider my professional life and career as Business/employee/creative. The reason why is because I am a business owner, I work with businesses and organizations to create not only their ideal video but a video that fits for what they want to tell. As of right now, my business consist of one person, but my hope is to eventually have a small crew of talented individuals that I also consider friends.
I am also an employee because I still freelance around town or in the state. I have worked with and continue working with some production companies around town and neighboring towns. It always fun meeting other people that love filmmaking and it also a great learning from others and improve my own skills.
Lastly, I am also a creative because I love to make thing look awesome and I hope you can see it in my work. I never imagined myself working in this industry. Getting to not just have fun on these jobs but also going to places I never imaged I would go to. I think it’s one of the coolest jobs anyone can do but it is also very hard to do it. What sets me apart from others is that just how I am learning and trying to get better, I wish to help those in the same place I am in or was at.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Aside from being a filmmaker, a Director of Photography, and Business Owner, I also love music, spanish christian music to be exact. I grew up in a spanish church and learned how to play the paino, electric bass, drums, guitar, saxophone, and a little bit of trumpet.
With this gift God gave me, I travel every weekend to Elkhart Indiana to perform and teach our church there.
I am also a youth pastor in my church/ministry.
