Today we’d like to introduce you to Sofia Pate.
Hi Sofia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was around 12 or 13, I started experimenting with my mom’s old Nikon. I really haven’t put down a camera since. When I was in the 8th grade, I purchased my first camera, the Canon EOS Rebel T6. I used to pack it in my backpack and take my friends for photoshoots after school. Midway through high school, I started taking it more seriously and charging. Back then, I would charge $30 for around 80 edited images. It took a lot of my time, and there wasn’t much financial gain, but I had so much fun. As time went on, I bought a lot more equipment and now feel really good about my way around a camera. Recently, I photographed my first all-day wedding, and I am proud looking back at how far I’ve come. Along with photography, I am also a full-time student at Michigan State University studying Creative Advertising with a minor in Media Photography. Outside of school, I am also involved in shows at The GhostLight Theatre located in Benton Harbor, MI. Summer of ’24, I starred as Catherine in their production of Pippin, and this summer I am involved in their production of RENT and Chess. Surrounding myself with other creatives allows me to learn and grow, and also for more people to take a chance on me when it comes to getting headshots done or any other photos!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’d say the road has been fairly smooth. Although doing a lot of things all the time can sometimes lead to a little burnout, I wouldn’t want it any other way. I thrive on organizing chaos, and it keeps my life interesting! While photography, school, and theatre are fun, I do sometimes have a hard time making time to work and make money. During the summer and weekends during the school year, I work at The Mason Jar Cafe as a waitress/barista. The owners of The Mason Jar have been wonderful to me and work with the crazy availability I throw at them. Growing up doing photography has put me in weird positions, such as asking myself if I want to do this as a full-time career or not. As I enter my 20s, I want to give myself more grace when it comes to putting pressure to figure out exactly what I want to do. I love photography, I love theatre, I love being creative! As time goes on, I’ll find that sweet spot between them all.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a photographer, mostly, but I also perform in local theatre. With photography, I am a multihyphenate! I shoot everything from headshots, weddings, events, couples, maternity, etc. I am most proud of how far I have come with my photos and editing. I have been a photographer for 7 years now, and let me tell you, there is a drastic difference in my editing style from then to now. Mostly what sets me apart from others is my ability to connect with my clients. Being a waitress and a performer helps me with my interpersonal skills. Usually, during my shoots, I love to ask my clients a bit about themselves. Especially when it comes to couples, asking them how they met and whatnot is always such a beautiful moment and even helps the client become more comfortable with the camera in their face. When I am behind the camera taking photos, I hate keeping my thoughts of praise to myself. When taking photos, you’ll frequently hear me say, “Yasss,” or “You better work!” or any other motivating phrases that help the client loosen up.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I am frequently on Instagram (@sofmichigan), either answering DMs or engaging with other photographers/creatives. In my bio, I have my photo email attached for people to reach out and book me or even collaborate with me! My DMs and email are always open for questions, or even if anybody just wants to chat. I love booking shoots and being able to try things during shoots I’ve never done before, so I encourage other creatives to reach out if they want to work on something together.
