Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonya Rineer.
Hi Tonya, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
What began as a one-woman operation has grown into a dynamic construction design firm serving Michigan and Florida. My background is deeply rooted in the trades—I grew up around blueprints, toolboxes, and construction sites. Over the last 30 years, I’ve held just about every role there is in this world: laborer, material runner, design assistant, and project manager.
In 2012, I officially launched my business with the intention of bridging the gap between architecture and interior design. I saw too many construction projects get derailed due to vague plans or poor communication. So I set out to create a process where every decision was documented, every detail mapped out, and every trade involved in the build had what they needed to do their job right—the first time.
That vision eventually became the backbone of what we do today: designing highly detailed Construction Design Manuals (CDMs) for custom homes. These manuals include 3D modeling, drawings, specifications, and detailed instructions for builders and trades. It’s a unique offering that has allowed us to deliver precision, eliminate miscommunication, and ensure that beautiful designs are actually built as intended.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road—and I’m honestly grateful for that. Like most small business journeys, mine has been full of curveballs: budget constraints, burnout, slow seasons, team restructuring, and some painful but necessary client breakups.
One of the hardest challenges has been stepping into my role as a true business owner and boss. I started out doing everything myself, and learning how to delegate, set boundaries, and protect my time (and energy) has been a big transformation.
There have also been internal mindset shifts—letting go of the fear of being too expensive, learning to speak confidently about the value we bring, and unlearning the belief that hard work has to mean suffering. Every lesson has shaped me into a stronger leader.
As you know, we’re big fans of Adamo Construction Design. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Adamo Construction Design is a Michigan-based construction design firm that specializes in creating comprehensive design documentation for custom home builds. We aren’t interior designers in the traditional sense—we don’t stage or source furniture. Instead, we focus on the architectural and construction side of design: cabinetry, finishes, tile, flooring, lighting, plumbing, built-ins, and more.
Our signature deliverable is the Construction Design Manual—a customized set of detailed drawings, 3D renderings, and specifications that act as an instruction manual for the entire build. We also gather quotes, organize materials, and help ensure that everything is priced, ordered, and executed with accuracy.
What sets us apart is how we integrate both design and construction thinking into our process. Because of our background in the trades, we know what builders need to execute flawlessly. And because of our design expertise, we ensure the home reflects the client’s vision without compromise.
What we’re most proud of is how often our clients (both homeowners and builders) tell us that our involvement saved their sanity, their timeline, and their budget. Some have even said we prevented legal disputes just by being the glue that held it all together. That level of impact means everything to us.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck definitely shows up—but I think of it more as alignment. The moments that feel like “luck” are usually the result of consistent hard work, staying open to opportunity, and trusting intuition.
That said, there have been some very fortunate turns—meeting the right builder at the right time, or receiving unexpected praise from a past client that led to referrals. But there’s also been what looked like bad luck—like losing a major client or dealing with construction delays—that turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Every twist has taught me something
Is there any information you’d like to share with readers who may not be building a custom home (yet)?
Absolutely. Not everyone is building a new home right now—but that doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from professional design support. That’s why we created the Design Day experience in our studio. It’s a one-on-one, in-person session where we dive into your design goals, review your plans or ideas, and create a complete ready-to-execute plan with layouts, mood boards, and product recommendations. Because our Design Day experiences start at only $1,200, they are perfect for homeowners planning a renovation, builders wanting to test out our process, or even past clients coming back for help with a new phase. And sometimes, people just want to see what it’s like to work with us before committing to a full design package. It’s a low-pressure way to get clarity, experience our process, and walk away with something tangible. Plus, you never know—it might be the beginning of something bigger.
