Today we’d like to introduce you to Hayley Hungerford.
Hi Hayley, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hyssop Floral was founded by Hayley Hungerford in 2019 and is now co-owned and operated by Hayley and her husband, Zachary. After five years of working from a home studio, they expanded into their first brick-and-mortar location in 2024.
Connecting with the community through their shared love for floral design and timeless goods has been incredibly rewarding. They are committed to supporting intentional, quality brands that share their core values and remain dedicated to sourcing flowers from local growers as often as possible to stock their cooler. Their greatest hope is to foster connection and beauty through the language of flowers.
Zachary and Hayley share all aspects of the business, from administrative work and hosting consultations to designing for events, tending to and harvesting flowers from their garden, teaching workshops, and managing inventory at the studio. They are truly grateful for the opportunity to pursue their passion together while serving a community that they hold dear.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The growth we’ve experienced has been incredible. We have worked diligently to maintain the quality of our work, communicating effectively and educating others about floral design as we reach a broader audience from our studio. The effort, passion, and care that goes into sourcing flowers for each event and special occasion motivates us to continue. We stay focused, processing new information, and listening to our clients’ needs to make necessary adjustments.
We’re always seeking new ways to meet our community’s needs while staying true to our values. Recently, a mother who attended one of our workshops mentioned she loved our store but hesitated to come inside in the past worrying that her children might damage or break something. Since then, my mother, who works in early childhood, gifted us a children’s desk for the corner, which we decorated with floral-inspired coloring pages. We had been looking for a chair to go with it, and after a week without luck, a friendly customer surprised us with two chairs she was excited to donate. We thanked her with a bouquet, but her kindness was truly unexpected and meaningful.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We specialize in providing full-service floral design for weddings and events. Our walk-in flower cooler is always abundant with flowers available by the stem along with wrapped bouquets and signature arrangements.
In our studio, we host flower arranging classes and creative workshops, favoring a seasonally inspired, modern garden-style of floral design that embraces minimalism. We also carry specialty cards, vases, candles, home decor, and other meaningful gifts.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
We’ve learned the importance of refining our processes to be more present during the design phase and connected with our clients. This involves better inventory management and anticipating needs in advance.
Additionally, we’ve become more skilled at sourcing flowers that reflect our aesthetic and enhance our unique arranging style. This has streamlined our work, allowing us to focus on creativity.
