Meet Katelynn Ostruszka of Katelynn Scott – Decorating Den Interiors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katelynn Ostruszka.

Hi Katelynn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
After more than ten years in digital marketing, I realized I needed a change. I’d always loved design, and I missed having a creative outlet. So I enrolled at the New York Institute of Art & Design and started doing small e-design projects on the side while still working full-time.

It wasn’t until I was on maternity leave that everything clicked. Becoming a mom gave me perspective, and I knew it was time to stop waiting. I left my corporate job, joined Decorating Den Interiors, and launched my own business, Katelynn Scott—named after me and my husband, because family is at the heart of everything I do.

Now, I get to help others create homes that feel good to live in. Design can be life-changing. It affects how we feel, how we function, and how we connect with the people we love. I’m grateful every day that I get to do this work.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not a smooth road, but one that’s been worth it.

Starting your own business comes with a lot of self-doubt. There were days I questioned everything: if I made the right choice, if I was doing enough, if I could really make this work. Balancing being a new mom with launching a business added another layer of challenge, too.

There’s a constant pressure to do it all, and it can be exhausting. But every tough moment has taught me something. I’ve learned to trust myself more, to quiet the noise, and to keep moving forward even when things feel uncertain. The hard parts are what make the wins feel so meaningful.

We’ve been impressed with Katelynn Scott – Decorating Den Interiors, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Katelynn Scott – Decorating Den Interiors, we’re all about creating spaces that feel good to live in. I offer full-service interior design, which means I handle everything from the first idea to the final install. My goal is to take the stress out of the process so clients can actually enjoy seeing their home come together.

What makes my approach different is how personal it is. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all design. I spend time getting to know my clients, how they live, what they love, and what they need from their space. That’s what guides every decision. I come to you, bring samples, and we work together to create something that’s both beautiful and functional.

I’m really proud of the heart behind this brand. It’s named after me and my husband, Katelynn Scott, because family is everything to us, and that spirit runs through the work I do. One of the most meaningful parts of this job has been partnering with nonprofits like Make-A-Wish and Suite Dreams. Getting to design spaces for children in need is a reminder of how powerful and healing a well-designed room can be. It’s about more than just how a space looks- it’s how it makes you feel.

If there’s one thing I want people to know, it’s that your home should support the life you want to live. I’m here to help make that happen.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My best advice is to just show up. Go to the events, introduce yourself, follow up, and be genuine. People can tell when you’re being real, and that’s what builds trust.

For me, local networking groups and industry events have been huge. I also found a mentor early on who had been in the business for years. Just having someone to bounce ideas off of or get honest feedback from made a big difference. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Most people are more willing to share than you’d think.
