Conversations with James Byce

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Byce.

Hi James, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
We have been open for just over a year. We felt that this area needed something to help people in the area learn a skill that made them more employable. I’m the owner and instructor here with 3 other outstanding instructors.. I was unemployed after 25 years in the medical industry and found myself going broke. After a year and a half looking for work I went to Michigan works to help find a job. Took a aptitude, test and it came back 97% cosmetology. I went back to school and got my license and started working in a salon. After years of work thought what a good way to help people find work I opened the school.

It has been a lot of work,and trial and error but we are in our 2nd year with 25 students private and Owosso high school CTE program. Off to a great start.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest part was the financial part for students, so we decided we are now going through accreditation so we can take Pel grants and student loans. We have a few ways to help until then with the help of frankenmuth credit union and FTC financial aid.

We had a hard time finding instructors but I think we found a fit and are moving forward with frat new ideas and formats that will give students more knowledge to understand the many facets of this field.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I’ve been in to art and growing up turned that in to music hobby that allowed me to play live and open for national artist
