Daily Inspiration: Meet Jamie May

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie May.

Hi Jamie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I didn’t start in photography right away. After college, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in graphic design, I spent a few years working in real estate. But eventually, I felt the pull back to my creative roots. That’s when I picked up a camera again.

I started slowly—photographing family and friends, checking out countless books from the library, and relearning my camera. Thanks to my background in design, I was already comfortable with editing software and visual composition, which gave me a great foundation.

Not long after, a neighbor and friend who had a photography degree offered to join me in shooting weddings. We took a leap and did our first wedding show together—booking 15 weddings right off the bat. At first, weddings intimidated me. But after just a few, I realized they were my favorite part. There’s something special about capturing joy, connection, and once-in-a-lifetime moments.

When my friend relocated to Detroit, I asked my longtime friend from middle school, Marie, if she’d be interested in joining me. She trained with me for a year, learning the camera and the flow of weddings. From that point on, we’ve been a team. Sixteen years and over 350 weddings later, we’re still going strong.

Photography has been a true joy and blessing in my life. I get to witness love, laughter, and milestone moments, and meet the most incredible people. Even after all these years, every time I get an inquiry or a new call, I feel the same excitement. Being self-employed, especially in a seasonal place like Michigan, can be uncertain—but every day I get to do what I love is a gift. And I’m so grateful for that

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Overall, it’s been a pretty smooth road. We’ve been fortunate to receive so many referrals and positive feedback from clients over the years, which has helped us grow and sustain the business.

Of course, there have been challenges too. One of the toughest parts of being self-employed is the emotional side—wondering where your next job will come from. Photography in Michigan can be very seasonal, and during the slower months, it sometimes feels like you’re in limbo, not knowing what’s next.

It takes a lot of faith and perseverance to hang in there. But every time the phone rings or an inquiry comes in, it’s a reminder that people still value what we do. That keeps me going. I’ve learned that passion and persistence are just as important as talent in this industry.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in wedding photography and portraits. Also being based in beautiful West Michigan and just minutes from Lake Michigan, I specialize in beach photography—it’s one of the most sought after backdrops.

Over the years, I’ve also had the pleasure of working with a variety of clients, from corporations to high school seniors, families, and beyond. If you can imagine it, I can help you bring it to life through photography.

Weddings have been the heart and soul of my business and are what have truly sustained me in this career. I’m incredibly proud of the hundreds of couples and families we’ve served. What sets us apart is not just our technical skills, but our ability to connect. We genuinely enjoy being part of the day, blending in with family and friends, and sharing in the celebration.

We’re known for being easygoing and pleasant to work with, while also knowing how to take charge when needed to keep things moving smoothly. With years of experience, I’ve developed a sharp eye for light and a fast reaction time to capture the moments that matter most—those fleeting, emotional, joyful flashes that tell your story best.

We’re not the kind of photographers who stand still and let moments pass by. We’re active, engaged, and always ready to make the day better by being fully present. It’s not just about taking photos—it’s about making memories.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I have always kept Jesus as the anchor in my life. I have trusted him to provide for my needs and business. Everything that comes my way is a true gift because I love what I do.
