Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Kessler.
Hi Amber, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started Cosmetology school in 2005 at the Douglas J. Aveda Institute in downtown Ann Arbor.
After graduating and receiving my license, I started working at the Douglas J Salon down the street. I had a couple amazing mentors before taking clients. Working here set the foundation of my career.
Fast forward to 2015, I started my own business. Naturally Raw Hair. I specalize in haircuts and bridal styling. I rent a salon suite in Sola Salons just up the road from downtown A2.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve learned along the way how to prioritize my time behind the chair and also how to set boundaries when it comes to emails and text messages when I am out of the salon.
Selfcare for myself in an industry that is very demanding not only physicaply but mentally, has really kept me going. I workout and meditate daily, take vacations, practice yoga, eat healthy and get outside as much as possible.
We’ve been impressed with Naturally Raw Hair, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a salon that uses, sells and provides services using Natural and Organic haircare. I don’t use any synthetic fragrances in my salon suite.
My industry is typically pretty toxic and I have spent alot of time researching, using products on myself first and then clients to find what works while maintaining my standards of being clean.
It’s important to me to use non toxic products as I am touching and breathing them in everyday.
I even make some of my own products. I also don’t mind if clients bring in their own fregrance free products for me to use on them.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
100% any stylist just getting licensed should always apprentice at a salon. This really helped me build my confidence and I could always ask my mentors if I needed help or advice. Also being able to receive construtive criticism is important for growth.
I have always found being friendly and kind with other stylists/makeup artist make it very easy to network.
