Hello, I’m Ericka Matthews, the proud owner and lead planner of Color Me Fancy Events, LLC — where romance meets organization and dreams turn into aisle-worthy realities. My journey began over a decade ago, with a wedding planning certification in one hand and a heart full of passion in the other. I’ve always been the friend who loved love stories, swooned over first dances, and cried at every ceremony (yes, even the ones in movies). After planning my mother’s wedding years ago, I thought — why not turn that passion into a career?
What started as a spark quickly became a full-blown love affair with wedding planning. From intimate backyard vows to glamorous ballroom “I dos,” I’ve had the joy of planning, styling and coordinating weddings all over the greater metro Detroit area. Every event is different, but my goal is always the same: to give each couple a stress-free, stunning, and joy-filled celebration that feels uniquely theirs.
I’m a hopeless romantic at heart — and nothing fills my cup more than meeting a couple at their most overwhelmed and watching them begin to breathe again as we plan their dream day together. I always ask how they met and how the proposal happened (I’m a sucker for the details), and I love weaving those personal moments into their wedding in ways that surprise and delight.
Every little thing — from the first meeting to the last email, the color swatches to the cake tastings — builds toward that magical moment when it all comes together, and I get to watch love take center stage.
One of my proudest highlights? My daughter, who was just a toddler when I started this journey, is now 16 and working alongside me as a junior coordinator! Watching her help couples and learn the ropes is like seeing a second love story unfold — this time, between mother and daughter.
Today, I’m supported by a team of five fabulous people who help bring each event to life with picture-perfect precision. Wedding planning has truly been one of the greatest loves of my life, and I can’t wait to meet the next couple ready to say “I do.“
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Every year brings its own set of challenges, with some seasons sweeter than others. But nothing rocked me quite like the COVID-19 pandemic.
When the world shut down, so did Color Me Fancy Events. It was heartbreaking. Weddings were postponed, canceled, or downsized to living room ceremonies over Zoom. I remember sitting in my office, looking at my calendar wiped clean, and thinking: If I’m not a wedding planner, then who am I? It was one of the hardest chapters of my life.
I tried to keep busy with other projects, but nothing quite filled the space in my heart like planning weddings did. The joy, the connection, the confetti — it just wasn’t the same.
But love, as always, found a way. When the world slowly reopened, so did I. I took it one step at a time, cautiously reintroducing services (minus the linens at first — baby steps!). And now? We’re back at it, full speed ahead, creating magic one wedding at a time.
Those bumps in the road taught me resilience, reminded me why I started, and made me appreciate every single wedding day even more. It’s true what they say — you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone. And let me tell you, I’m never taking love, laughter, or a full dance floor for granted again.

From small, intimate affairs to over-the-top, luxe celebrations, we do it all — and we do it with heart. What sets us apart? It’s not just our attention to detail (although yes, we do notice if a charger plate is an inch off-center). It’s the way we treat each wedding like it’s the only one that matters. Because to our couples, it is.
I make it my mission to really get to know each client — not just their wedding vision, but their story. I want to know who they are, how they met, what makes them laugh, and what made them cry happy tears during the proposal. I use those little nuggets to add meaningful touches that make their wedding feel personal, not just pretty.
We’re known for creating elegant, emotionally-driven events that are both stylish and stress-free. Whether it’s guiding couples through vendor selections or fluffing a dress before the big reveal, we’re there for every moment — seen and unseen.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the fact that Color Me Fancy Events has built a reputation for being warm, professional, creative, and above all, dependable. And now, having my daughter join the team as a junior coordinator makes the brand feel even more like family — which is exactly what I want my couples to feel like when they work with us.
Our team of five helps bring the vision to life, from setting up every flower and favor to making sure the last candle is lit before guests walk in. We’re dreamers, doers, and detail-obsessed romantics — and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
