Hidden Gems: Meet Joel & April Spencer & Reed of Halfway to Halloween

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joel & April Spencer & Reed.

Hi Joel & April , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Joel started off as a vendor selling miscellaneous toys. Joel have always had a passion for Halloween as well as working at haunted houses. Joel felt like Michigan was missing something within the Halloween community. One day Joel decided to combine being a vendor and passion for Halloween. He invited his wife Nikki, and his friends April and Casey to join the adventure.

We started off doing Halfway To Halloween Expo in a VFW hall in Livonia with only 40 vendors for its first year. It went well, but we wanted to make it bigger. We decided to move to Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds in Ann Arbor MI.

2025 is the 5th Annual Halfway To Halloween. The event houses over 160 vendors, a hearse car show, costume contest, live performances, reptile encounters, and food trucks. We also have worked in collaboration with 7 local haunts to build an amazing cohesive haunt.

Admission is $5 online pre-sale and $10 at the door. Admission includes entry to the haunted house, hearse show, performances, vendors, costume contest and free smells from the food trucks.

We are still at Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds in Ann Arbor MI.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We started the business with our own money, so finances are always a challenge.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Our business specializes in bringing horror metaphysical, halloween and macabre findings and entertainment to the community halfway between halloween. The comments that we hear most about our event is that we have a wide array of vendors offering multiple different options. For whatever your interest is, the her show is pretty popular, but probably our pride. And joy, this year is our collaborative haunt. We have 7 local haunted houses who abandoned together to build one large walkthrough haunted house for the day. They will also be there. Uh, selling tickets to um their own attractions.Looking for new haunt actors etc.

What does success mean to you?
We at halfway to Halloween, have kind of an odd way of gaging hours successful, our show is we gauge our success by word-of-mouth, and when we travel the country to other conventions and tell them where we’re from, if people tell us they’ve heard of us that lets us know that. We are at this point successful, and hopefully becoming more successful
