Rising Stars: Meet Eric Lindsey of Kerry Town, Ann Arbor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Lindsey.

Hi Eric, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Since before I can remember, I was an artist. I could look at something and draw, paint, or sculpt it in proportion and with great detail. Because I was good at it, I had faith I could make a career with my talent. I studied art in California and Italy, and graduated with a BFA in sculpture and Italian. I learned of the field of facial prosthetics shortly before finishing school at Long Beach state in 2003. I contacted everyone I could find in the field and applied to graduated programs. I was offered an apprenticeship position with Phillip Danz, a fourth generation ocularist in Sacramento, California. After five years I purchased his business and renamed it Prosthetic Aritists, Inc. Prosthetic artists expanded from ocular prosthetics into silicone facial prosthetics and grew until 2020, when COVID shut downs forced changes to the business structure. I began working at the Kellogg Eye center in 2022, and continue to operate Prosthetic Artists in three locations, Folsom, California, Ann Arbor, Michigan and Lihue, Kauai.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While I have a wonderful job that allows me to create beautiful things with my hands and help people feel whole, it is not without its challenges. Getting paid by health insurance is frustrating, expensive, slow and unreliable. Good employees are rare and entitled ones are abundant. Of course there are the many hats one wears as a small business owner. I have made many mistakes along the way and hope the lessons I learned help me to avoid making them again. The art is the easy part!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My mission is to create the most realistic looking artificial eyes and facial prosthetics available. I use my talent and 23 years of experience to create hand painted, hand sculpted, and sometimes computer aided human parts from plastic and silicone. I have trained other ocularists and enjoy teaching what I do to other professionals in the field. I care deeply about the final result and spare no effort to make it as perfect as humanly possible. I believe my patients know this about me and appreciate the time and effort I put into every piece.

I also enjoy fine art, specifically bronze figure sculpture when I can carve out time for it.
