Today we’d like to introduce you to JahJah Shee.
Hi JahJah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
JahJah Shee (27), born and raised in SE Michigan. I’m a first gen college student with a degree in Arts & Entertainment Management from Eastern Michigan University. Graduating college in 2019, I landed right in the touring industry as a working stage manager/ Video Technician.
I traveled the US, Canada, UK and Australia over the last 5 years completing over 300 shows in theatres across the world!
The shows I had the opportunity to work on include Jimbo’s Drag Circus, Drag Queen Christmas, Alyssa Edwards: Life, Love and Lashes, and more!
With that experience I learned a lot quickly about the art of drag. Also with my skill as an acrylic painter, love for theatre and crafty talents- I FELL IN LOVE WITH IT
So in the midst of my touring career I found a way to explore drag myself. Shortly after that I discovered pageantry and with my competitive nature had to give it a shot!
I am now the current reigning Miss Port Huron Pride and Miss Amateur Gigi’s and it’s only the beginning.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being away from home for long periods of time.
Navigating the drag community as a self taught entertainer (no drag mother etc)
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
JahJah was created about 4 1/2 years ago. As an theatre kid and visual artist- Drag was the outlet that seemed to combine all the things I love. From production, to costumes to the entertainment on stage- I love it all.
I’m know for delivering a polished look, typically something Theatre based, touch of camp, sometimes some fun spoken word and almost always a reveal 🤩
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Yes! that was essentially my drag makeup boot camp.
I started to explore the art just before lockdown, and once lockdown happened I had nowhere to start.
So I spent a good portion of time home practicing makeup and getting VERY ADVENTUROUS with different looks and makeup tricks.
I did some online performances and an online lipsync contest and actually won! That’s what really sparked the competition portion of my drag like “shoot I could actually be good at this”
