Inspiring Conversations with Mary & Maddie Mancus of Glitter & Scotch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary & Maddie Mancus.

Hi Mary & Maddie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hi! We are the mother/daughter duo behind Glitter & Scotch! Born out of our love of fashion, styling friends, and sourcing the best hostess gifts, Glitter & Scotch came to be on May 1st, 2021! We believe that coming into our store is like walking into your best friends closet! Our mission is to appeal to a range of ages, sizes, and styles that look good on everyone!
The retail gene runs in our family and we both got bit by the bug! Mary has her Fashion Merchandising Degree from Western Michigan University, and Maddie received her degree in Fashion Merchandising and Marketing from The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles.
For several years we were encouraged by family and friends to open our own store, which we are proud to say is turning 4 on May 1st, 2025. Our journey has been full of laughter, tears, and of course lots of fun! Our customers have become our friends that we are happy to see every time they step through the front door.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Our road has been full of ups and downs, which is par for the course withy any new business, especially retail. We are so lucky that we can rely on each other for our good and bad days, it is something not a lot of other boutique owners have. We have both worked in retail prior to opening Glitter & Scotch, but this is our first shot at opening our own brick and mortar, so we have learned almost everything from the ground up. Everyday brings something new that we have to face head on but we are always up for the challenge.

We feel that our great customer service, honesty, and the true relationships that we form with each one of our customers set us apart from other boutiques. We want you looking good and feeling good in any piece you pick up from Glitter & Scotch. We want you to feel confident and comfortable coming back and keeping us top of mind for all of the various life events everyone has! We offer “shopping your way”: from in store personal styling, porch drop off, facetime calls, and private shopping parties with friends, we want to make it as easy as possible to add Glitter & Scotch to your life and closet! We really value building relationships with every customer walking through the door, and often times they become our friends! We love to be a part of your life from telling us secrets, to inviting us out for cocktails-we love it all!

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
We strive to maintain great community relationships, by being active members of our Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Grosse Pointe. Right now there has been a huge push for shopping local and support small businesses. It is hard to compete against online mass merchandisers and Amazon. This is what we, along with our fellow retailers, see as the biggest challenge to come. As far as trends, they come and go, but we stay on top of it and informed, but also try to see which will be more of a macro or micro trend that we need to hop on, and that will fit the needs of our community.
