Conversations with Riley Bean

Today we’d like to introduce you to Riley Bean.

Hi Riley, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started out producing and performing music with a mix of live and digital instruments in 2012. I go through phases based on the music I’m listening to and also the gear I add to the collection. My first album “Tidal Waves” features sounds from the Ensoniq EPS16+ and a more retro 80’s vibe and layered vocals. In 2021 I started DJing as part of the set and for private events , as a way to have the ability to transition my tracks without pauses and work in other music that inspired me. “Loving Among Us” is the alien synth-house follow, up with sounds from the Korg Prologue. The third album is coming in 2025 and is tailored for the dance floor with more groovy house vibes and Talkbox synth vocals and effects run off the Prologue.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say it has been smooth but chill. It’s a blessing and curse that I know that I’ll be gigging this project for the rest of my life. The slow and steady approach has worked well but I’m ready to play some more breakout gigs at this point. I enjoy every second of it and am making some lasting connections , so trying not to force things , just sit back for the ride.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have a live DJ hybrid set as Beanstalk, incorporating live elements live synth, talkbox, vocals, and percussion. I also play drums in the neo-soul group Violet Sol. I’m most proud of the uniqueness of the sound and the attention to detail I have with the mixes in my productions. I combine influences from several genres and innovate new synth sounds and effects regularly, not using loops or many presets.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I played at South By Southwest (SXSW) on my 21st birthday opening for Lucius, with The Paths.
