Meet Darius Walker of Grand Rapids

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darius Walker.

Hi Darius, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My first exposure to stand-up comedy happened as a kid, sitting in my bedroom with Comedy Central on the TV. Back then, Comedy Central was the pinnacle of comedy channels, overflowing with content, though it only aired late at night, so I’d have to stay up to catch a set. Thankfully, many sets ranged from just 15 to 30 minutes, which was perfect for my shorter childhood attention span. As I grew older, my desire to watch more comedy expanded, and I also sought out a wider variety of voices. Initially, I was most interested in Black comedians and their perspectives, finding them more relatable. However, as I matured, I wanted to hear from white, female, Hispanic, and other comedians to absorb their diverse viewpoints. I continued watching throughout college as a way to unwind during stressful times, often thinking, “This is a good moment for a laugh.” Fast forward to 2019, I discovered the open mic scene in Grand Rapids, MI. Watching comics of varying skill levels and backgrounds perform seven-minute routines, one Sunday night at Mulligan’s Pub, I said to a friend at the mic with me, “I think I could do better than that guy.” My friend nudged me and said, “Prove it!” I signed up for the open mic the following month and went on stage with my written jokes; the set went well. Looking back, I know it wasn’t material I’d dare use today, but the feeling of making people laugh was exhilarating. I attended a few more open mics, but I didn’t really have the opportunity to seriously pursue comedy until 2021, right as things began to open back up. Not only did I want to do it, but I also wanted to improve. My goal was to reach a point where I could confidently win over any audience, regardless of their demographics or beliefs. As I progressed, I gradually started hitting more milestones. My first paid show was in Kalamazoo in 2022, followed by paying opportunities at Dr. Grins Comedy Club in 2023, and eventually weekend work throughout Michigan and nearby areas like Windsor in 2024. Even in 2025, my growing confidence has been matched by increasing opportunities such as being apart of a sold out show for Gilda’s Laughfest Comedy Festival here in Grand Rapids!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve come to realize that the more you learn about and invest in stand-up comedy, the clearer it becomes that the path is far from smooth. It’s a long road, often quite literally, loaded with metaphorical “deer” as you drive for hours with no guarantee of an audience upon arrival, only the prospect of performing for a meager $27 before turning around and heading back. Sometimes, it’s a five-hour round trip for just five minutes of stage time. You juggle your full-time job, whether it’s a 9-to-5 or 7-to-3, then hit the road to make people laugh, network, and hone your craft, hoping to get home before midnight to salvage some sanity for the next day.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a comedian, I primarily utilize the traditional setup-punchline method, intentionally keeping my material clean because I have no desire to divide the audience with vulgarity. I approach it with the same mindset as watching an explicit scene in a movie with your parents – wouldn’t it ease the tension if it simply wasn’t there? On the other hand, I deeply appreciate dark comedy, especially when it revolves around real-life experiences. I believe we should always be able to acknowledge life’s events, as it can resonate with others who have had similar experiences. I define my comedy as clean adult dark humor, and it feels very personable. I’m proud that after a show, the barrier between the stage and the audience often dissolves, and people feel comfortable sharing their own experiences with similar situations I’ve touched on, whether positive or negative.

What makes you happy?
When it comes to activities, comedy brings me a uniquely profound joy. The rush of seeing a crowd of smiling faces and hearing laughter that I directly contributed to while on stage is unparalleled. How could anyone not be happy after witnessing that?!
