Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Hanks.
Hi Megan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Our story started when our youngest sister, Kendal, decided to open her own salon in downtown Muskegon in the Waterstone building. The landlord approached Kendal about the possibility of her opening a store in the adjoining suite. Kendal brought the idea to us, and at first we thought it sounded fun, but not anything we would really be qualified to do. We eventually decided to pray about it since we couldn’t stop thinking about the idea.
After some prayer and everything just falling into place, we decided to go for it even though none of us really had any retail experience, other than shopping. While the building was undergoing renovations, we started buying and storing merchandise in our parents basement. We opened in May of 2023 and have been having lots of fun sourcing products and working together. Kendal’s salon, The Collective, opened October 2023.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a learning experience for sure. We are still learning what customers like, where to source quality products, timing, budgeting, all the things that go into owning a small business. It’s not always easy, but we have lots of fun and enjoy learning, growing, and tracking our progress.

We are a boutique that carries clothing, home decor, baby, and gifts. We are three sisters who are not only co-workers, but neighbors and friends. We love working together and all compliment each other’s gifts and talents. Mardi and Megan are former stay at home moms who have a passion for all things family and home. We try to make the shop a reflection of our passion for cozy living, close family relationships, and be a welcoming place for our customers. Our classic clothing style and home decor are a reflection of our personal taste. We want to be a warm and inviting place for people to enjoy their shopping experience. We strive to create fun displays to inspire our customers to love their home. We love getting to know our customers and forming new friendships.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
People would probably be surprised to learn that we have no previous retail experience.
