Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikayla White.
Hi Mikayla, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My story is a fun one in that I always knew I wanted to bake in some capacity. Years back I was living in Alaska with my family and my older sister, Carla was always so creative with cakes and themed desserts. I really have to credit her for introducing me to the creative outlet of baking! Fast forward to today, my husband and I now have a small hobby farm and I have been fortunate enough to be by able to follow my dream of owing a custom bakery. I started this business a year ago with much trepidation, but I am so excited with the momentum I have gained and the support I have received. I have focused my efforts on sourdough breads, custom themed sugar cookies and a fan favorite, cinnamon rolls. I’m truly grateful for this opportunity and the life it has provided.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not all days have sunshine. As a mother of two young boys, there is always an element of unpredictability in our lives. Naturally, family comes first so sometimes there are late nights and very early mornings trying to meet order deadlines. Things took off much faster than I expected with the overwhelming support from the community. It came with a lot of learning curves, including having to figure out how much flour or butter to buy on a weekly basis… let’s just say there was quite a few late night store runs.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I almost stumbled upon this, but certain decorative cookies have been a huge hit at local farmer’s markets in my area. At home, we have chickens, cows, horses, goats and ducks. I was inspired to use cookie cutters of farm animals and was overwhelmed by how quickly they sold out. My chickens and cow cookies specifically are always a big hit among children. I’m often told my cookies stand out as they remain softer than others and the detail in my decorating has earned me recognition. .
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I would challenge anyone who has been riding the fence to have enough faith in themselves to follow their dreams. Of course it was scary putting myself out there as the fear of failure was constant. Now here I am, a year later, growing what started out as a mere dream into a profitable business for my family. I have no regrets and only hope to inspire others!
