Community Highlights: Meet Meagan Bretz of Asian Healing Traditions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meagan Bretz.

Hi Meagan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was introduced to Acupuncture after following a series of signs pointing me in the direction of an acupuncture school open house. I received a treatment and felt my nervous system calm down immediately at this event, and I thought, “I want to help people feel this good in their own bodies”. So, I applied to the school and started the semester two weeks later. It was a sudden shift for me, but also made a lot of sense as I was a recent college grad and was open to new adventures!

After graduating from school in Chicago, my husband and I relocated closer to his home in Ann Arbor, MI. Here I started my own clinic and expanded as I moved into my women’s health specialty. With this clinic expansion, I added the most amazing and talented practitioners to my team – acupuncturists, a massage therapist, a Reiki master, and a Craniosacral therapist. A few years ago we moved into a beautiful clinic space on the west side of town that I also started, called the Little Lake Wellness Hub. This hub is a full and part time practitioner space for all things wellness, and most of the businesses are woman- and LGBTQ+ owned practices!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overall it has been a fairly smooth road, thankfully! As most small businesses can attest to, 2020 was a tough time. We just made adjustments to care, such as doing herbal consultations via Zoom, teaching acupressure to patients to do some work at home, etc. We did our best to stay connected with patients, while also taking the time to reset.

As you know, we’re big fans of Asian Healing Traditions. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Asian Healing Traditions has become a beautiful collection of practitioners who work together to provide the best, personalized care for each patient. Adding in the other modalities (massage, reiki) has really rounded out the pool of services that we offer. Our clinic does a lot of work with Women’s Health (fertility, peri-and menopause), pain management, neurological disorders (Parkinson’s, neuropathy), and gastrointestinal disorders.

We have a full herbal pharmacy in house so that we can provide convenient and customizable formulas for our patients. We have herbs in pill form, liquid tinctures, granular powders, and raw herbs that you cook yourself! I think our variety of in-house herbs sets us apart from other clinics, and that shows as we use telehealth services to do herbal consultations for people all over the state of Michigan. Both of our acupuncturists, both my self and Jee Ae, have done extensive herbal training both in school and after to really hone our formula building skills. I think you can tell we’re quite passionate about herbs!

My colleague Jee Ae is also trained in a specialty called neuro- or scalp acupuncture, which is an excellent option for those with neurology disorders, and those who need to remain in a chair for treatment. This style of acupuncture isn’t as easy to find, so I think this sets up apart as well.

Our reiki practitioner, Nina McDermott, is another special gem at our clinic. Her deep meditation practice has helped her develop her energy work into a well executed, effective, and kind hearted practice. Her sessions take place in our newly renovated sound healing room – full of chimes, bells, brushes, and a gong! These sessions are truly special and are my favorite thing to do when I am stressed!

What makes you happy?
Working with this group of incredible women! I think it is rare to have a work situation where you look forward to the work you do as well as the people you work with. We have cultivated such a warm space to treat in and I hope all of our patients can feel that when they walk through the door.
