Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Ortiz-Rich.
Hi Nicole, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I began my journey as a pet bather in 1993 at a local pet grooming shop in Livonia. The shop owner was an award winning international Certified Master Groomer and provided me with many opportunities to expand my skill set in terms of safe pet handling, understanding animal behavior and of course, helping pets enjoy the process of getting bathed, dried and brushed out. Within my first year, I was offered an apprenticeship to learn how to professionally groom pets. The emphasis was on breed standard hair clipping, scissoring & styling, as well as understanding how to enhance unique features of each pet. After 2 years as an apprentice, I then starting building clientele and established myself as a professional pet stylist. In 2008, I started working at local veterinary practice as the staff pet stylist. This experience further enhanced my understanding of overall pet health as it relates to grooming. In 2010, I decided to open my own mobile pet salon, which has been my greatest career achievement! Within the first six months, I had a fully booked schedule, working full time, 5 days per week, year-round! My entire client list grew entirely through word of mouth! In 2014, I obtained National Certified Master Groomer status with the National Dog Groomers Association of America, which is a voluntary program whereby a pet stylist will perform written and practical skills testing under the supervision of experienced professionals, judging against accepted industry standards. I’m very proud to have achieved this, as it is a testimony to my passion, drive and commitment to providing the utmost care for pets!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This journey has been exciting and challenging! There were many opportunities for personal & professional growth along the way, but the one that stands out to me was when I was severely mauled by a very large dog. This could have ended my career, but I chose not to allow that frightening event to destroy my passion. After reconstructive surgery and several months of healing, I was able to resume my career.
We’ve been impressed with Precious Furs LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Precious Furs LLC is my luxury mobile pet spa. My specialty is helping small breed dogs look and feel their best by providing natural, customized spa treatments designed to enhance their skin & coat health. I also provide aromatherapy massage, nail trimming & filing, as well as observing the overall physical condition of the pet. As most clients are on monthly maintenance schedules, I am able to help in monitoring for changes in the overall health of the pets in my care.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory involves spending time with my grandparents on their boat! As a child, my family lived in Florida, so boating was a big part of our lives! If not on the boat, I could usually be found playing with neighborhood pets!
