Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael And Summer.

Hi Michael and Summer, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We have both been in the industry since before we met. Our end goal was always to own a small little spot to exercise our craft and have a good time doing it. Together, we have worked in NYC, Nashville, Montana and now Grand Rapids.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No path in our business is a straight line. We had so many missteps and set backs throughout our careers, but you just keep going. Lots of really talented chefs and sommeliers give up for greener pastures, but we decided to make the pastures ourselves and see our dream through.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Summer is our General Manager/ Lead Server and most importantly, Sommelier. Michael is the chef. It makes our food and beverage so seamlessly compatible. We know each other’s style and taste and palettes so well. We try and pull in high quality and accessible wines from all over the world, with heavy emphasis on Italian wine. Summer’s background is in Italian wine, and it just goes perfectly with Michael’s food. Not to say he cooks strictly Italian fare. He also has a strict focus on supporting local agriculture. The closer our produce is to the restaurant, the better. And building a community of suppliers instead of a cold transactional relationship keeps things honest. And come harvest time, we have a really strong connection that helps us navigate the best produce and support as many small family farms as possible.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Gumption. Don’t wait for someone to come whisk you away to your dream. Cut trail yourself. Communication. There is no way to read each other minds, so we have to talk about everything so we are always on the same page.
