Inspiring Conversations with Lindsay Lane of Lane Law PLLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Lane.

Hi Lindsay, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story begins in Detroit, where I was born and raised. Growing up there taught me the importance of hard work, perseverance, and adaptability—values that have shaped both my personal life and approach to business.

When I was ten, I asked my parents for a “real” cash register for Christmas so that I could start my own pretend business. Little did I know, that would end up being one of the best gifts I’d ever receive. It wasn’t just about the cash register or pretending to run a business, it sparked creativity, curiosity, and a lasting fascination with entrepreneurship.

After high school, I decided to take a gap year. While I was leaning toward a career in medicine and law, I also had a deep love for movies. So, I enrolled in film school. What started as a genuine appreciation for film soon turned into curiosity about the industry itself, especially the legal side of filmmaking. By the end of the program, I was still set on pursuing medicine and law.

I began my college journey at Wayne State University, then transferred to the University of Michigan-Dearborn. There, I majored in health policy, which was the perfect intersection of my interests in medicine and law, complemented by coursework in business and marketing. Not long after graduating, I applied to law school and was accepted at Detroit Mercy Law the following year.

During law school, I found myself gravitating toward transactional law. I gained valuable, practical experience as a student attorney in the school’s housing clinic and externed at both the Wayne County Probate Court and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. After graduating and passing the bar, I secured a position as a judicial law clerk at the Bankruptcy Court. In this role, I worked on consumer and business bankruptcy cases, analyzing complex legal issues, conducting research, and drafting judicial opinions. The experience provided me with insight into the judicial decision-making process, while also strengthening my foundation in bankruptcy law and broadening my understanding of other related areas of law. However, after three and a half years as a law clerk, I reached a turning point. Growing frustrations in my role made me realize it was time to bet on myself.

I made the bold decision to pivot away from bankruptcy law and start my own firm, Lane Law, PLLC, while also taking on a role as of counsel with a boutique law firm. I further committed to expanding my expertise in trademarks, contracts, and business law through specialized training and collaboration with other attorneys.

After reflecting on my passions for fashion, food, travel, and sports, I saw an opportunity to combine these interests with my legal expertise. Entrepreneurs and creatives in these industries often need specialized legal guidance to protect, grow, and scale their businesses. This insight inspired me to focus on areas such as trademarks, contracts, copyrights, and entity formation. By merging my legal expertise with my love for these industries and beyond, I’m able to help clients protect their intellectual property, build solid business and legal foundations, and position themselves for long-term success. I’m incredibly grateful to be doing work that I love and am truly passionate about.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting Lane Law, PLLC was a huge leap of faith. It hasn’t always been a smooth road; it’s been a journey of believing in myself, having faith in my business, and staying committed to the process. When I launched the firm it was just me, my expertise, and sheer determination—no team, all hustle. I expected a few bumps along the way, but I didn’t realize exactly how many hats I’d have to wear until I found myself wearing them all at once.

Between client work, marketing, meetings, setting up systems, and handling administrative tasks, everything required my attention. I quickly realized that running a law firm involves so much more than just practicing law. Finding balance was difficult. However, learning to delegate effectively made a huge difference, allowing me to manage the firm more efficiently. Like any business, operating a law firm involves trial and error, figuring out what works, what doesn’t, knowing when to pivot, and thinking outside the box. Even now, almost two years in, I’m still working toward the vision I have for the firm.

Each case brings something new that keeps me on my toes. Every obstacle has been an opportunity to grow, both as a lawyer and an entrepreneur. Above all, my faith in God keeps me grounded, focused on the future, and gives me the strength to keep moving forward.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
While it may sound cliché, believing in yourself and your business is necessary for success. Confidence sets the tone for how you show up every aspect of your business and empowers you to take calculated risks, make tough decisions, and stay focused on your goals. By identifying your ideal client and having a clear plan, you can stay true to your vision. Otherwise, challenges and opportunities that don’t align with your goals can easily distract you and throw you off course.

The behind-the-scenes operations of your business are just as important as the work you do. Taking the time to implement systems and processes from the start will pay off in the long run. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later. And don’t be afraid to pivot when things don’t go as planned.

Seeking guidance from an advisor and mentor was a game-changer for me. I was fortunate to connect with someone who not only has experience owning and operating a law firm but also specializes in the areas of law I practice. Their advice on everything from marketing to client relations, case management tools, and tackling common business issues has been invaluable. Also, having a solid advisor and mentor to turn to for ongoing support and guidance is something every entrepreneur can benefit from. It has significantly shaped the way I approach both business and the practice of law.

When it comes to growing and expanding your business, your network is one of your most valuable assets. Building genuine relationships with industry experts, professionals from various fields, and colleagues can open doors you didn’t even know existed. A diverse circle of contacts also helps you stay informed about industry trends and developments, gain fresh perspectives, exchange referrals, and share resources.

As your business grows, you’ll be able to build a team, delegate tasks, and streamline day-to-day operations.
