Conversations with Sicarra Black

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sicarra Black

Hi Sicarra, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had a deep love for fashion and a natural eye for seeing things a little differently. My real start in the industry came in 2010 when I graduated from the International Academy of Design and Technology with a bachelor’s in Fashion Design and Merchandising. That’s where I spent years learning the ins and outs of personal styling and how to bring clothing designs to life in a way that feels both intentional and expressive.

My creativity has always been influenced by my vivid imagination, the world around me, and the culture that shaped me. Growing up, my mom was a hairstylist, and I spent the majority of my childhood in the salon. I’d spend hours flipping through Black Hair and Hype Hair magazines, daydreaming about what outfits the models would wear if they stepped right off the page. That’s really where my love for style storytelling began — creating looks in my head that brought each image to life and imagining how clothes could elevate someone’s whole vibe.

What really drew me into designing was my natural attraction to unique pieces—I could never quite find exactly what I was looking for, so I decided to create it myself. One of my favorite parts of the process is revamping multiple clothing items, taking different elements and combining them to create something entirely new. There’s something special about transforming what already exists into something fresh and unexpected. This approach not only pushes the boundaries of design but also allows me to offer my clients exclusive pieces that can’t be duplicated. Whether through my styling or my clothing, my goal is always to create something intentional, one-of-a-kind, and reflective of the person wearing it.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I think that’s what has made my journey so meaningful. Like any creative path, there have been challenges- doubt, financial hurdles, and figuring out how to carve my own lane in an industry that can be both competitive and unpredictable.

One of the biggest struggles was finding my voice as a designer. Early on, I knew I had a different vision, but learning how to trust that vision and stay true to my style, even when it didn’t fit into traditional fashion molds, was a process. There were times when I questioned whether people would embrace my approach to revamping and reimagining clothing, but I kept pushing forward.

Another challenge has been balancing creativity with the business side of fashion. It’s one thing to design, but it’s another to turn that passion into a sustainable brand. Learning the ins and outs of entrepreneurship, from marketing to production costs, has been a journey in itself.

Through it all, I’ve realized that every challenge has only made me stronger. It’s forced me to be resourceful, think outside the box, and stay committed to my craft. The road hasn’t been easy, but it’s been worth it—because I know I’m building something authentic and true to who I am.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a fashion designer with a love for creating one-of-a-kind pieces that blend creativity, sustainability, and individuality. My specialty lies in reimagining fashion—taking multiple clothing items, deconstructing them, and combining elements to create something entirely new. This process allows me to give new life to materials while designing pieces that can’t be duplicated.

I’m known for my edgy yet sophisticated aesthetic, blending bold statement pieces with timeless elements. My goal is to empower women to express themselves unapologetically through fashion.

One of the things I’m most proud of is staying true to my vision. In an industry that often leans toward mass production and trends, I’ve carved out my own lane by embracing upcycling and sustainable fashion in a way that still feels high-end and exclusive. It’s rewarding to see my designs resonate with people who appreciate not just the style, but the story and craftsmanship behind each piece.

What sets me apart is my ability to merge innovation with authenticity. I don’t just design clothing—I create experiences. Every piece tells a story, and every client I work with gets something that feels personal, intentional, and completely their own.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I had the opportunity to work with a mentor last year in a group setting for about six months. The mentees came from different industries, but she had a way of asking the right questions and delivering insights that were valuable across the board. What stood out the most was how she didn’t just focus on short-term fixes—she took the time to dissect my business individually and helped me see it from a long-term perspective. That experience was incredibly beneficial and gave me tools I still apply today.

Beyond that, I’ve learned that mentorship isn’t always about having one specific person guiding you—it can come from different interactions along the way. Networking has played a big role in my growth, whether through attending fashion events, pop-ups, or just being intentional about engaging with other creatives. Social media has also been a great tool for building relationships with designers, stylists, and industry professionals. A simple conversation or collaboration can lead to unexpected opportunities.

My advice for finding a mentor or expanding your network is to stay open and proactive. Seek out spaces where people are doing what you aspire to do, don’t be afraid to reach out, and always be willing to learn. Some of the best lessons I’ve received have come from simply listening, observing, and being open to growth.
