Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Johnson
Hi Andrew, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born at a very young age in Trenton, Michigan. I’ve been an artist at heart since I could hold a pencil, but life had other plans for a while. After high school, I joined the Army and served for ten years before transitioning into cybersecurity, which is now my day job—I work as a cybersecurity program manager.
Art, though, has always been my outlet. I got into digital art around 2019 as a hobby, mostly as a way to cope with PTSD. I started posting pieces on Instagram, and over time, it became more than just a creative escape. I’ve always loved the art that surrounds live music and felt pulled to be a part of that world. So I just went for it—I started designing posters for bands without being asked and would cold-email them my work. I’ve always believed that the worst thing someone can say is “no,” and trust me, I heard that a lot. But eventually, I heard a “yes.”
That first breakthrough was with Puscifer—one of Maynard James Keenan’s bands (alongside Tool and A Perfect Circle). My art wasn’t in the right format to be used as a poster at the time, but the band loved it enough to purchase it anyway. They now use it on merchandise like hoodies, blankets, and more. That moment opened the door to other opportunities, and since then I’ve been lucky to work with artists and brands like Primus, Carina Round, The Disco Biscuits, Houseplant, and have had official publications with Phish and Goose.
My wife has been my biggest supporter throughout this journey. She’s the driving force behind turning my art into products—we run beepboopbopart.com together. Check us out! We’ve got some new poster collaborations in the pipeline that we can’t talk about just yet, but we’re excited for what’s coming.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve been fortunate in the sense that my full-time work as a program manager allows me to support my family while still pursuing my art. But that doesn’t mean it’s been easy. Balancing a demanding day job with the creative hustle can be a grind—late nights, early mornings, and squeezing in design time wherever I can.
The real obstacles often show up behind the scenes: managing tight creative deadlines, navigating last-minute changes, coordinating between printers and merch teams, and learning the ins and outs of production—none of which came with a manual. There’s a lot of trial and error, and more than a few lessons learned the hard way.
The art and music community, thankfully, has been incredibly welcoming. But like I mentioned earlier, you have to be okay with rejection. You can’t take “no” personally, and you have to be willing to listen to feedback—even when it stings. Growth comes from putting your ego aside and being open to evolving your work. That mindset has helped me keep pushing forward, even when the road gets bumpy.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I work in Corporate America as a cybersecurity program manager, I tend to keep it at that when discussing work and art together, i do not like to mix the two worlds as best i can if that makes sense.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me—first and always—is family. But beyond that, it’s about sharing my art with the world and creating something that sparks a reaction. I’m driven by the idea of making things no one’s ever seen before—visuals that evoke emotion, whether that’s joy, curiosity, confusion, or even a little unease.
To me, that’s the power of art. When someone sees one of my pieces and it brings back a memory—a moment with friends at a live show, a night that meant something to them—that’s everything. Art and music have this way of embedding themselves into people’s lives, becoming part of their story. Being able to contribute to that experience, even in a small way, is something I don’t take for granted. It’s an honor to play a role in those moments.
