Rising Stars: Meet Kyra Houston of Detroit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyra Houston

Hi Kyra, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey began when I unexpectedly lost my job and needed a way to generate income while searching for a new opportunity. A former coworker turned friend, shared that she had started working as a notary. Inspired by her success, I reached out to learn more about the process. She was incredibly helpful, guiding me through each step, and soon after, I became a notary myself.

Initially, I thought notary work would be my primary focus, but it ultimately led me to discover my true passion—helping others. This realization opened the door to additional opportunities, including resume writing, business development, and event coordination. Each of these ventures allows me to support individuals and businesses in meaningful ways, and I continue to build on these experiences as I grow professionally.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like any new business, the journey hasn’t always been smooth. One of my biggest challenges has been establishing myself in a highly competitive and saturated industry. Standing out required persistence, strategic networking, and continuously refining my skills to offer unique value to my clients. While the process has been challenging, it has also been incredibly rewarding, pushing me to grow both personally and professionally.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a State of Michigan employee working for the Department of Insurance and Financial Services, with a bachelor’s degree in Health Administration and over eight years of experience in healthcare and insurance. What I am most proud of is my resilience—both in my career and in life. I navigate a field where there are few young Black women, yet I continue to rise above challenges and make my mark. What sets me apart is my unwavering determination—the fire within me that pushes me forward, no matter the obstacles I face.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t believe in luck—everything I’ve achieved has been a blessing. Every challenge and opportunity has played a role in shaping my journey, and I view each experience as part of a greater purpose. My success is a result of faith, perseverance, and hard work rather than chance.
