Community Highlights: Meet Crystal Williams of Kris Tall f/x Makeup and Nail Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Williams

Hi Crystal, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I used to model when I was younger and the makeup artist never was able to match my skin. So I learned how to do my own. From there did all the makeup for high school drama company. After high I attend cosmetology school to earn my manicuring license to have income and be able to attend Wayne state to teach. But never stop doing makeup and nails. Now after teaching for over 20 years, I never put down my makeup or nail brushes. To owning a salon for 15 years and doing what I truly love. Which also includes receiving my nail educators license. Now my goal is to combine my love for nails, makeup and teaching, I am in the process of opening a cosmetology school.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The struggle has been real. While owning my own preschool, my mother was diagnosed with dementia. Which, in turn caused me to have to take care of her full time. I closed my preschool to run my salon full tim. It was easier to run a salon, then the preschool. My mother committed suicide in 2013. I was now left alone with one special needs daughter and one daughter that I adopted from my preschool. I had to stick my heels in deep to provide for the 3 of us.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
When I first attended cosmetology school, it was so that I could make a living while at an University. Not realizing that even after receiving my educators degree, I would return to what helped me to the beginning. When I apply makeup or do some form of a manicuring service on a client. It’s a time for people to relax, speak freely or just sit and enjoy their services quietly. My people skills are that of a great non-judgemental friend, that is always inviting. And when you have a captive audience, selling a service comes easily. That’s when your work takes over. Applying makeup to a client’s face that thought their nose was too large. To having them want to learn how to achieve the same look at home. To a nail biter growing the own long beautiful designed full set of natural nails. Most of the people that enter my salon come in as clients and stay as friends.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love how our people that live in our city can make ANYTHING out of whatever resources are available.

The lease thing that I don’t like about our city is the lack of educational resources are available.
