Today we’d like to introduce you to Lacy Galas
Hi Lacy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Lacy Galas. I’m a makeup artist, hairstylist, and co-owner of Blushing Ivory Bridal Co. LLC. My passion for the beauty industry began when I was just a little girl. I remember drawing eyeliner on my Barbies with permanent marker and cutting their hair with kitchen scissors. Little did I know that I was preparing myself for my dream career, with an unforgettable journey along the way.
In my younger years, I had the opportunity to shadow my talented sister Lindsey Smith, who was a freelance makeup artist at the time. While most of her clientele were bridal, she was slowly climbing the ladder to high profile clients and working as a professional makeup artist. Being able to work along side her as an assistant was a great first impression of the industry that would quickly change my life.
From there I moved on to working in a salon for a while, but ultimately discovered that my passion was freelance makeup and hair styling. I started my first solo business when I was 26 years old. I am very fortunate that it grew in success quickly, however, my high demand for bookings led me to have to turn clients away frequently. While this was an exciting time in my career, it was disappointing to have to turn clients away who wanted to work with me.
It just so happened that one of my best friends in the industry, Courtney Klaassen, was having the same issues as I was. After much discussion, we decided to merge our solo freelance businesses together. Thus, Blushing Ivory LLC came to fruition!
This career has taken me to places I could only dream of! Some highlights of my journey include; styling performers hair at the Electric Forest music festival in between their sets, having the opportunity to do bridal makeup on the set of TLC’s Say Yes To The Dress, being featured on The Knot.com, having our work featured in the New York Times, and working on a PETA campaign with the beautiful Torrey DeVitto. My career has become more than a job to me, it’s my passion in life and a dream come true.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As a people pleaser at heart, my biggest struggle as a business owner has been learning how to be assertive and stand my ground when it comes to my policies. I personally find conflict to be stressful and something I try to avoid at all cost. I’ve learned that my soft spoken, easy-going nature sometimes doesn’t go hand-in-hand with owning a business.
I’ve experienced a handful of clients who have tried to intimidate me into giving them a deal. When I was a novice in my industry this was something I truly struggled with as a non-confrontational person. Now with 14 years of experience under my belt, I know my worth and feel confident in my abilities. Although I may still get butterflies in my stomach while discussing my policies with some clients, I have my experience in the industry and credibility to give me the confidence I need to handle these uncomfortable conversations.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
With over 14 years of experience in the beauty industry, I’ve had many opportunities to perfect my soft glam makeup application. It’s become what I’m known for! My goal is to make my clients feel like the best versions of themselves. My signature soft glam makeup application highlights my clients best features, and enhances certain aspects of their face with photography flash in mind. I use all HD products to ensure that their makeup looks great in any lighting with any amount of flash.
When it comes to styling my clients hair, I prefer to take a more natural approach as well, and stick to soft romantic styles. I look at hair as a sculpture, and carefully place each strand to ensure it best suits their facial shape and features.
I’m incredibly proud of the reputation I’ve made for myself in the bridal industry. It’s also been inspiring to make close connections with other vendors in the same industry, whether they be photographers, fellow artists, or wedding planners. This community is so vibrant and filled with people who truly care about their clients!
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
When the news first broke about the pandemic, I had no idea how I was going to navigate my business throughout the crisis. With my company specializing in hands-on services specifically for social events, this was especially tough news for wedding vendors and our small businesses.
Oddly enough, the Covid crisis ended up positively affecting my business and allowing me to grow closer to my clients by working with them for multiple events. While large gatherings weren’t permitted, micro weddings became the new trend. A micro wedding is a smaller gathering with no more than 50 people invited to the event. The safety of my clients was my number one priority. Taking extra sanitation precautions and masking allowed us to pick up with business as usual. The best part about our clients having micro weddings was that they still wanted to have a larger party the following year. Working with our clients for both weddings allowed us to get to know them on a more personal level. It was exciting to see their original vision for their wedding come to life after the disappointment of moving forward with a micro wedding during the pandemic.
