Meet Huda Gilbert of Ypsilanti, Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Huda Gilbert

Hi Huda, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I discovered my passion for photography at the age of 17, drawn to the idea of capturing life, people, and stories. My journey into wedding photography began when a friend asked me to photograph her wedding. I quickly fell in love with capturing joyful moments and life events. I spent six years doing wedding photography full-time, and during that time, I got married and started my own family.

When I was pregnant with my first child, I wanted the perfect newborn photos. However, I knew that newborn photography was much more intricate and specialized than wedding photography, and I couldn’t find a photographer in my area who could capture the type of images I envisioned. That’s when I decided to try it myself. While pregnant, I started collecting props and ideas, and just two days after my daughter was born, I took her first photos.

Although I had no experience with newborn photography or working with babies, I instantly fell in love with the process and the results. Eager to learn more, I enrolled in classes, invested my savings into props, equipment, and education, and began photographing the babies of friends and family. Gradually, I transitioned away from wedding photography and focused entirely on newborn photography.

Now, I couldn’t be more fulfilled. What I do no longer feels like work—it’s my true passion and calling.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a completely smooth road, but the journey has been incredibly rewarding despite the challenges. One of the biggest struggles was transitioning from wedding photography to newborn photography. While I had a lot of experience with weddings, newborn photography required an entirely different skill set, and I had to learn quickly. The process of figuring out how to safely pose newborns, understand their needs, and use the right lighting was overwhelming at times, especially without any formal experience with babies.

Another challenge was the financial investment I had to make. I poured my savings into props, equipment, and education, which was a big leap of faith. It wasn’t easy to balance the costs with the uncertainty of starting a new venture, but my passion and belief in the process kept me going.

Building a reputation in the newborn photography world also took time. At first, I had to start by photographing friends and family to gain experience and build a portfolio. Getting my name out there and attracting clients who trusted me with their newborns was a slow process, but as I honed my skills and my work started to speak for itself, things started to click.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in newborn photography, Maternity and baby photography.

What sets me apart from others is my passion for this field. I spend all my days and nights thinking and working on improving my business. Trying to come up with new ideas to differentiate me from others.

I’m most proud of the moments I’ve been able to create for families. Newborn photography is such a delicate art, and I am so proud that I’ve built a reputation for creating images that parents treasure forever. What’s most fulfilling is knowing that I’ve played a part in preserving those lifetime memories.

For me, it’s all about authenticity and making sure that the photos I capture reflect the beauty and emotion of those special moments. It’s not just about the technique; it’s about the connection and the emotions behind every image.
