Hi Nneka , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a young Nigerian-American girl growing up in the suburbs of Metro-Detroit it was always a struggle to find a culturally competent hair stylist that could cater to the intricacies of my desired hair styles. Some days I wanted braids, some days I wanted other forms of hair extensions, and other days I wanted to wear my natural hair. While every hair stylist I met had the best of intentions and were genuinely aiming to please, regardless of the style, it was difficult to find a hair stylist that understood my hair and hair like mine. In my twenties, being exhausted by this, I had the idea to start my own beauty company designed to cater to all women and people in every shade and with every hair texture. I knew my experiences with not feeling seen in this industry were not unique to me. Many women feel this same way, so I decided to fill that need. My first step was starting online, where I worked with experts to create skin care products and sourced the best quality hair extensions on the market. Traveling to suppliers around the world to source the best quality hair for my clients and customers was a labor of joy. From there I developed and provided high quality skin care products that not only address the most common skin issues, but my products were created with CBD and other rare and quality ingredients aimed at the rejuvenation of the skin, and regeneration of the cells which promotes real genuine health for my clients’ skin. While many were afraid to incorporate CBD and it’s properties into their products, I decided to be a trailblazer as my research continues to show it is a powerhouse for addressing skin health. From there I opened my first brick and mortar location in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Queen Level Beauty is a full service beauty salon located in Sterling Heights offering a variety of beauty services for your hair, face and body. We cater to every demographic, at every age and also offer an African couture fashion house where you can design custom attire for your special events like weddings, celebrations and important occasions. As the owner of Queen Level Beauty, I strive to provide the experience I was always looking for. Come as you are, walk in and be treated like the royal that you are, feel seen and be catered to.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I already anticipated that this journey would be long and with God on my side, I know it has been smoother than it would have been without. I take customer service very seriously! The client experience is at the top of my priority list, and sticking to my brand promise of ” Quality of the Highest Level”, my hiring process is where I establish and keep that promise. Being extremely selective regarding the talent that I allow to service our clients can present it’s own unique challenges, but the result is worth it for myself and all of the Queen Level Beauty clients that I hold very dear to my heart. I take every challenge as an opportunity to better serve my clients and community, grow my faith, go harder or brace myself to pivot. The key to anything is keeping faith, keeping your goals in focus, and being consistent. Another key is staying on brand, true to yourself and being adaptable. During the times where things are not as easy as I would like, I cling to my faith in God, and seek counsel from my village and in the times where everything is going right I praise and thank God for all my blessings and for continuing to bring me through.

We also have our own fashion house, Queen Level Couture, where you can have custom African attire designed for your wedding or special occasions. Queen Level Beauty caters to every hair type and texture. Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Seeing the smile on a client’s face after their service at Queen Level Beauty Salon is by far the best feeling. I think we as a society don’t value the effects of and the need for self care. Making someone feel like themselves again, or boosting their mood and confidence is such an amazing gift to experience. Investing in myself in a way that enables me to help others and give back to my community is the ultimate happiness for me. I am a nurturer at heart, so I knew the best thing for me is to make sure I build my life in a way that enables me to readily help others when they need it and no matter the circumstance.
