Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon Kreye
Hi Jon, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey as a photographer started at a young age—I’ve had a camera in my hands since I was eight. It began with simple snapshots of family trips, our dog, and anything that caught my eye. Over time, that childhood hobby evolved into something much bigger.
A few years ago, as Instagram was growing, I started doing commercial work with brands, photographing products like t-shirts and blankets. I quickly realized how much I enjoyed creating content and building relationships with brands. That passion led me to the world of short-term rentals, where I now travel the country photographing some of the most unique and sought-after Airbnbs and VRBOs.
This career has taken me from remote corners of Alaska to the shores of Hawaii and the mountains of Vermont. Along the way, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to not just photograph these properties but to experience them firsthand. Each stay allows me to capture not just the space but also the story behind it—the details that make it special and the people who bring it to life.
In 2022, I compiled my work into my first coffee table book, *Up North: Getaways of Minnesota and Wisconsin*, featuring some of the most stunning and unique rental properties in the region. The response was overwhelming, and I recently released my second book, *Back to the Woods*, showcasing even more hidden gems.
No matter where I go next, my goal remains the same: to inspire people to explore new places, embrace adventure, and appreciate the beauty around them.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road—like any creative business, there have been challenges along the way.
One of the biggest struggles has been the rise in competition. When I first started photographing vacation rentals in Minnesota and Wisconsin, I was one of the only people doing it. Now, with the rise of social media and ‘micro-influencers,’ there are hundreds of others showcasing rental properties in similar ways. While competition pushes me to continue evolving and refining my style, it also means I have to work harder to stand out.
Another challenge has been balancing my travel-heavy schedule with family life. I take my wife and daughters with me whenever possible, and those trips are some of my favorites. But there are times when I have to travel alone, which means time away from home. To adapt, I make it a priority to shoot locally when I can, giving me more opportunities to be present with my family while still doing what I love.
Despite these challenges, I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything. Every obstacle has pushed me to grow, and I feel incredibly fortunate to do what I love while sharing these incredible spaces with others.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work revolves around capturing the beauty and uniqueness of short-term rental properties, from cozy cabins in the Midwest to multimillion-dollar estates across the globe. I specialize in high-end, storytelling-driven photography that highlights not just the space itself but the experience it offers. My goal is to create images that draw people in, making them feel as if they’re already there.
I’m incredibly proud of the milestones I’ve reached in my career—publishing two hardcover coffee table books featuring some of my best work, being invited to photograph exclusive properties like the *Brady Bunch* House in LA and a stunning architectural masterpiece in Saint Lucia, and even being part of an upcoming TV show. These opportunities have allowed me to showcase my work on a larger scale and continue pushing creative boundaries.
What sets me apart is my distinct photography style—engaging, captivating, and carefully refined over years of experience. I’ve built a business model that not only sustains my work but allows me to help others grow in this niche as well. Hosting five creator retreats has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my journey, as I’ve been able to bring together talented individuals from around the world, fostering an authentic community of creatives who share a passion for this industry.
At the end of the day, I’m grateful to do what I love—exploring incredible spaces, telling their stories through my lens, and inspiring others to chase their own creative dreams.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My biggest piece of advice for anyone just starting out is to follow your dreams—they’re more attainable than you might think. When I started, I had no idea this passion would turn into what it has, but by taking small steps, staying persistent, and constantly learning, I was able to grow it into something beyond what I imagined.
Start small and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Reach out to others in your field, learn from their experiences, and surround yourself with people who inspire and challenge you. The creative industry is constantly evolving, and the more you can adapt and refine your craft, the better.
Most importantly, find your own niche and style. It’s easy to get caught up in what others are doing, but copying someone else’s approach will only take you so far. What truly sets you apart is your unique perspective—lean into that, develop your voice, and create something that feels authentic to you.
And finally, don’t give up. Success doesn’t happen overnight, and there will be challenges along the way. But if you stay passionate, keep pushing forward, and put in the work, the opportunities will come.
