Life & Work with Betsy Murdoch of North End/Boston Edison Area

Today we’d like to introduce you to Betsy Murdoch

Hi Betsy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Started in 2020, by four neighbors in the Boston-Edison neighborhood, The Congregation Detroit has become an anchor for the community.

The Congregation Detroit is a unique community gathering space housed in a beautifully restored historic church. Located in the heart of Detroit, it serves as a café, bar, and event venue, offering expertly crafted coffee, cocktails, and a welcoming atmosphere for neighbors and visitors alike. With a strong focus on community engagement, The Congregation hosts a variety of events, fostering connections and celebrating the city’s vibrant culture.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Since opening The Congregation Detroit in 2020, we have navigated an incredible journey filled with both challenges and opportunities. Launching during a global pandemic forced us to adapt quickly, finding creative ways to serve our community while ensuring the safety of our guests and team. Supply chain issues, staffing shortages, and shifting regulations tested our resilience, but they also strengthened our commitment to our mission.

Despite these struggles, the past few years have brought remarkable growth. We have built a space where neighbors can gather, artists can share their work, and local businesses can thrive. The overwhelming support from our community has fueled our expansion, leading us to co-own two additional establishments—The Rectory Detroit and Demitasse Detroit. Along the way, we’ve refined our bar and coffee programs, expanded our events, and deepened our connections with the people who make Detroit so special.

While challenges will always be part of the journey, so will the opportunities to evolve and uplift our community. We remain dedicated to fostering a welcoming space for all and are excited for what the future holds. Thank you for being part of our story.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At The Congregation Detroit, we’re all about bringing people together. Whether it’s over a great cup of coffee, a well-crafted cocktail, or a community event, we’ve built a space where neighbors, artists, and friends can connect. Housed in a restored historic church, we’ve created a welcoming spot that feels like home—where conversations flow as easily as the drinks.

We take pride in our coffee and bar program, offering everything from carefully brewed espresso to thoughtfully made cocktails. But it’s more than just what’s in the cup—it’s about the experience. We want every visit to feel special, whether you’re stopping in for a quiet morning, meeting up with friends, or winding down with a drink.

What really makes The Congregation stand out is our commitment to community. We love hosting open mic nights, live music, markets, fitness classes, and all kinds of gatherings that bring people together. It’s not just about serving great drinks—it’s about creating a space where people feel welcome, inspired, and connected.

Opening in 2020 came with its fair share of challenges, but we’ve grown into something bigger than we ever imagined. Along the way, we’ve expanded our vision, co-owning The Rectory Detroit and Demitasse Detroit, each with its own unique vibe but the same dedication to hospitality.

At the end of the day, what we’re most proud of is the community we’ve built. The relationships, the conversations, and the moments shared here are what make it all worth it. We’re more than a coffee shop or a bar—we’re a place where people come together. And that’s what truly sets us apart.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What we love most about Detroit is its resilience, creativity, and community spirit. There’s an energy here that you don’t find just anywhere—people genuinely support one another, and there’s a deep pride in the city’s history and future. Detroit is full of innovators, artists, and entrepreneurs who are constantly shaping its culture, from its world-class music scene to its thriving small businesses. The sense of community is what makes it special—neighbors look out for each other, and there’s always a feeling that we’re building something together.

If there’s one thing we’d love to see improve, it’s continued investment in infrastructure and accessibility for all Detroiters. The city has made incredible progress, but issues like public transportation, road conditions, and equitable development still need attention. We believe that as Detroit grows, it’s important to make sure that progress benefits everyone, not just certain neighborhoods or industries.

Overall, Detroit is an amazing place to live, work, and create. It’s a city that knows how to overcome challenges, embrace change, and celebrate community—and that’s what makes it one of a kind.
