Rising Stars: Meet Kim Funk of Whitehall, Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Funk

Hi Kim , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey into world of pottery began in high school, but really took off in 2021 when I met Peter “the potter” Johnson. Peter is the owner of Terrestrial Forming Pottery and a seasoned production potter whose mastery of the craft captivated me. Under his inspiring mentorship over a two year apprenticeship, I discovered my passion for blending functionality with artistic expression, as well as a philosophy on how to live life through my art. Today, I serve as the pottery studio manager and technician, where I oversee inventory, coordinate kiln schedules, and ensure that everything runs smoothly in our 50 year old studio.

In addition to my studio responsibilities, I find immense joy in teaching pottery. Sharing my knowledge with eager students is incredibly fulfilling, and I strive to create a warm and engaging environment where their creativity can truly thrive. It’s wonderful to witness their confidence blossom as they explore their own artistic expressions.

Currently, I’m excited to be collaborating with Peter on an initiative to transform our studio into a vibrant community space. Our goal is to open our doors to local artists, offer workshops, classes, and collaborative opportunities in partnership with the Arts Council of White Lake. I am deeply committed to uplifting our creative community and fostering a love for pottery and the arts.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
While meeting Peter and my love for this space and art have been serendipitous, the journey has come with challenges. Learning the art of ceramics is a steep learning curve on its own, and taking over a studio that someone has called both a business and a home brings its own set of growing pains. Despite these hurdles, every moment has been worth it.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in creating functional ceramics that are both funky and whimsical, yet earthy in their aesthetic. My pieces range from garden gnomes, to mugs, bowls and lamps. I take great joy in blending my love of the wheel with hand-building and carving details. What sets me apart is my unique approach to firing; I often use high-fire reduction stoneware and have mastered this technique while working directly with my mentor in a large, distinctive down draft kiln firing environment. I’m proud of how my style reflects a playful yet grounded connection to the art of pottery.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
