Today we’d like to introduce you to Mars Obsidian
Hi Mars, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started tattooing at 17 years old, I’ve been an artist since I was old enough to hold a pencil, when I was a little tot me and my mother would talk about how I was going to be an artist when I grew up so I guess you could say I was born with a purpose.
As a teenager I tried several music and art based careers and tattooing came naturally, I’ve never had an issue finding new paths and challenges to be inspired by in this career so I was extremely excited to dive into this world. It turned out being the the biggest challenge of my life alongside the most important. As I moved into young adulthood I traveled to 27 different states with this career, I’ve met so many interesting artists and individuals that have changed me as an artist and as a human being. It’s responsible for a huge amount of my life experiences.
Since I’ve opened the private studio I have had an extreme focus on building my serious side as an artist, the grace of having a closed environment to really push myself is more than essential for me right now. I have a massive amount of goals beginning with this point. I don’t plan on slowing down when it comes to challenging myself and reaching those goals and styles.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The tattoo community is an aggressive challenge on its own, socially you have to be absolutely ready for voices on every type of opinion on every type of art. Some clients absolutely hate a certain style that another will be totally in love with. That rule is the same with your own art, you can be extremely proud of something just for your client to want to completely change it.
It is very few and far between to have the exact taste as your client so I would say reading minds is the most extreme challenge. Clients have trouble picturing things a good amount of the time as well as understanding our terminology if they are new to the art world. In a way we learn to speak a different language that suits that person specifically.
Tattooing is an endless craft, if you don’t stay with the times you will absolutely be swallowed by the industry. It can be intimidating so staying fresh, meeting the younger artists and those who are well traveled and experienced can really change your output on what you do. I want my style to change for the better yearly, so I try as hard as I can to meet people and study like I’m new at this. Alongside teaching, any way to stay in your toes and keep yourself inspired.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
