Inspiring Conversations with Janine Rex of Woodbridge Event Barn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janine Rex

Hi Janine, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am originally from the west side of Michigan but found my way to Mid-Michigan to blend my family with my husband’s. Everything fell into place so perfectly that it almost felt too good to be true. We bought a 100-year-old farmhouse—one with a rich history full of stories—and we even got married there.

The only thing missing for me was a job that I truly loved. Don’t get me wrong—I was thankful for the job I landed when I moved here. It was a steady job with amazing coworkers, but I’ve never been one to sit at a desk from 8 to 5. I thrive in fast-paced environments where I can move, interact, and be right in the middle of the action.

One day, while browsing job opportunities on LinkedIn, I came across a posting for wedding planning and marketing—from a steel construction company, of all places. I thought, What the heck, let me give them a call.

That one phone call changed my life in ways I never could have imagined.

Woodbridge Event is the dream of four owners—two brothers and two sisters—who were born and raised in Bridgeport, MI. When the property became available, they saw the perfect chance to bring their vision to life in their hometown. The name Woodbridge is a tribute to their roots, blending their last name, Woodruff, with Bridgeport, honoring the community that shaped them.

So, with over 20 years in the wedding industry, I’ve done it all—catering, bartending, planning, and executing unforgettable events. I’ve always dreamed of owning and running my own venue, so when the opportunity to manage Woodbridge came along, it was as if the stars had aligned. Now, I get to pour my passion and experience into creating seamless and beautiful celebrations in a place that truly feels like home.
Together, we share a deep passion for creating unforgettable moments, and I am honored to be part of the Woodbridge family, helping couples turn their dreams into reality. & having fun with them at the same time! <3

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced at Woodbridge has been learning to delegate and set boundaries. I am a go-getter by nature—I want the absolute best for every couple who walks through our doors and chooses to celebrate with us. My boss (one of the owners) is the same way, that’s why we get a long so well!

2024 was our very first year open, and we had the honor of hosting eight incredible couples as they said “I do” at Woodbridge. They all knew it was our debut season, but I was determined to exceed their expectations. In doing so, I often found myself (and my boss) stretched too thin, trying to do it all.

But experience is the best teacher. Every wedding went off seamlessly, and we couldn’t have asked for a better way to kick off our journey. That said, we learned a lot—lessons that have helped us refine our approach. During the off-season, we’ve made thoughtful adjustments to ensure not only that our couples are taken care of but also that we are taking care of ourselves. After all, by finding that balance, we can continue to serve our future couples with the same passion, energy, and excellence that Woodbridge is all about.

Which is great, because in 2025 we have 27 weddings!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I wouldn’t call myself the biggest bookworm, but when someone recommends a book for personal growth, I’m usually all in. Two books, in particular, have really stood out to me.
The first is Emotional Intelligence Habits. Let me start by saying—I’m an incredibly empathetic person, and I’ve realized that I often respond based on emotions rather than logic. This book opened my eyes to how our reactions shape our path and how being aware of our emotional state can change everything. It taught me the importance of building daily habits that foster self-awareness, both in life and at work.
The second is You Are a Badass. This book doesn’t sugarcoat anything—it calls you out on your habits and shows you exactly why you are where you are. More importantly, it teaches you how small mindset shifts can lead to a more fulfilling and successful life. I’ve read it once and listened to the audiobook, and each time, I feel personally attacked (in the best way possible). It’s a much-needed wake-up call that always catches me off guard.
Now, let’s talk podcasts. I was never really into them—until recently. Lately, I’ve found myself hooked on Kylie Kelce’s Not Gonna Lie podcast. It’s a bit of a guilty pleasure, but honestly, she feels more like a friend than a celebrity. She’s so down-to-earth, and her candid takes keep me coming back for more.
Here’s why I love it:
1. Her confidence as a taller, stronger woman in sports. She openly talks about her experiences and brings on other women with similar backgrounds. The confidence she and her guests exude is something all women—especially our tall friends—can feed off of.
2. Her unfiltered humor and realness. She says the things I’m already thinking, especially from my middle-class, rural perspective. Case in point: when Philadelphia called a two-hour delay after the Super Bowl, she flat-out said, “No, that is not a reason to call it.” And I couldn’t agree more.
3. She’s a wife and mom first. Despite being married to a professional athlete, her priority has always been her home and family. I love how she keeps it all in perspective.
