Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Downing
Crystal, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In 2022 I was let go from my career as a Regional Property Manager due to an ongoing illness. I hit a low in my life and often wondered who I was anymore and what my purpose was. After my battle with depression I decided that my life and happiness was in my own hands. I had 5 kids and a husband to take care of. Thankfully the Veteran Affairs was there to help and support me through our trials and tribulations. I still couldn’t find happiness in myself.
One day I picked up a branch and thought about what it could be even though it was broken. It might sound lame but I felt like that branch. Broken and discarded. I turned that branch into a beautiful centerpiece and was so proud of my accomplishment that I picked up another piece and then another. I decided I could do THIS! I had passion again. A sense of purpose. So, now I turn discarded wood into something beautiful again. That is how I started my business Tru Sawdust – Reclaimed Wood Decor.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Right now I am battling Fibromyalgia, Hashimotos, Depression, and Migraines. I am currently have lesions on my brain that are being monitored. I struggle daily with pain and fatigue. There are many days I can’t do the things that I love but I know the good days are right in front of me. I keep pushing through not only for my happiness but for the happiness of the ones I love and who love me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I don’t know if I’d call myself a “specialist”. I just enjoy taking something (wood) that is “ugly” or “destroyed” and turning it into something beautiful again.
I’m known for the beautiful pieces I create and I’m proud that people reach out to me with their ideas and I turn them into something they can be proud of.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
My plan is not to be a big corporation. I want to enjoy what I do and make sure that I have the time to put my best effort into every piece I make. I plan on attending more events and fundraisers and being a part of the community by showing I care and support other small businesses.
