Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystina Miller
Krystina, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The early years of my career were spent in hospital systems, specifically within neuro-rehabilitation units as a spinal cord injury specialist. At this level of physical therapy, our primary goal was to help patients “relearn” to walk and move again. Many of these individuals faced life-altering changes following catastrophic accidents—simple daily tasks such as getting out of bed, brushing their teeth, or making coffee required significant time, effort, and assistance. Despite the challenges, I found my stride in this environment. The connection built with patients and their families over weeks of trust, perseverance, and shared victories made the work profoundly rewarding.
During intake interviews, I noticed a recurring and disheartening trend: once patients moved beyond the initial denial and began accepting their new reality, they often spoke of their hobbies and professions in the past tense. The phrase “I can’t” became a common refrain. It was a personal challenge for me to reframe this mindset—to help my patients rediscover what was possible after a spinal cord injury. This passion for exposing individuals to new experiences led me to the world of adaptive sports and recreation.
I spent my free time exploring every opportunity to reintroduce my patients to the activities they once loved. Whether it was getting back on the basketball court, into the saddle, or in the water, I sought ways to bridge the gap between rehabilitation and recreation. I began volunteering with various organizations and serving on program boards, working to expand opportunities for people with disabilities. However, as policies and restrictions within hospital systems grew increasingly rigid, it became more challenging to integrate sports into rehabilitation. I realized that my true calling lay in outpatient physical therapy, where I could continue guiding patients beyond their initial recovery and into a lifestyle of movement and activity.
My work in outpatient therapy led me to an unexpected but fulfilling path—business ownership. I reached a point where I needed to step away from the constraints of a traditional therapy gym. I wanted patient needs, not corporate directives, to drive my business decisions. The only way to fully integrate my passion for adaptive sports, rehab psychology, and physical therapy was to forge my own path. With the support of referring physicians and equipment vendors, I launched MATRX Health & Fitness.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The early days of the business were mobile. I met patients in their homes, in community gyms, or at local parks to provide treatment. As the demand grew, I established a physical location. However, I signed the lease a week before the COVID-19 shut down in 2020. While we were lucky that our landlord was understanding and flexible regarding our lease initiation, it was difficult to obtain equipment. Business assistance grant offered through the federal government and our local chamber helped to reduce the financial burden with the slow start, but it was SLOW in the first year. The business has been able to grow more rapidly in the past two years with increased brand awareness and the return of in-person activities and adaptive sports events. At the present time, we are struggling to secure a clinic space that meets more of our long-term needs; the current real estate market has made this challenging as well.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
MATRX Health & Fitness was founded on the understanding that rehabilitation extends beyond physical exercise. True recovery requires a collaborative approach among healthcare providers, patients, and their families. I had seen firsthand how delays in communication and equipment acquisition could impede a patient’s progress. At MATRX, we prioritize interdisciplinary collaboration to streamline care, minimize delays, and maximize functional recovery. Our name reflects this commitment—MATRX stands for Maximizing Abilities Through Research-based eXercise. Too often, physical therapy is dictated by insurance limitations, leading to generalized treatment plans and minimal direct oversight from Doctors of Physical Therapy. Our approach is different: we focus on individualized, research-backed treatments delivered by highly skilled professionals to ensure each patient receives the care they need to achieve meaningful progress.
Unlike traditional outpatient orthopedic clinics, MATRX takes a holistic, patient-centered approach. Our therapists specialize in optimizing the nervous system and tailoring treatment to diverse populations. For athletes, this means refining sport-specific movement patterns to enhance performance and prevent injury. For older adults, we emphasize functional strengthening, balance training, and fall prevention. We are also deeply committed to neuro-rehabilitation, assisting individuals recovering from spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and strokes in reclaiming their independence. Whether it’s regaining mobility for daily tasks like showering and walking or achieving competitive success in adaptive sports, our mission remains the same—to empower individuals to realize their full potential.
Beyond clinical care, MATRX Health & Fitness is dedicated to fostering an inclusive, active community. We offer adaptive fitness classes and participate in statewide adaptive sports programs, regularly sponsoring and volunteering at events that introduce individuals with disabilities to new sports and recreational activities. These events provide a safe environment, specialized equipment, and expert instruction, opening doors for participants to explore new possibilities. Many go on to seek advanced training and individualized equipment, such as specialized wheelchairs, allowing them to compete at elite levels despite physical disabilities. Witnessing these transformations reinforces our belief that rehabilitation is not just about recovery—it’s about redefining what is possible.
At MATRX Health & Fitness, we empower individuals to become their own advocates for success. By guiding patients through available resources for work, school, and recreation, we help them rediscover opportunities and set meaningful goals. Our ultimate aim is to transition each patient toward independent self-management through a structured maintenance program, enhancing their overall quality of life. We believe that movement is not just therapy—it is freedom, confidence, and a pathway to a fuller, more active life.
What does success mean to you?
Success is making progress toward attaining an established goal. The path to success is ever evolving and is often riddled with obstacles. It is my personal mission to ensure that our patients never stop striving for their goals.
Success for MATRX and its mission is defined by the positive impact we have on the lives of the people we serve. The greater the number of patients who succeed in their recovery, the more opportunities we can foster for participation in adaptive sports, and the greater awareness we can bring surrounding community accessibility and acceptance, the greater our success in this industry.
