Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Roberts

Hi Lisa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up moving all over the country– when we’d move to a new area, my mom & I would find the Main Street and all the cute stores– the heart of the town. I loved how much personality each business had, and knew one day I wanted a business on a Main Street of my own!

I went to Notre Dame undergrad, got my MBA from University of Florida and ended up in Michigan working for Bank of America. Eventually, over time, I worked my plan to open a main street retailer in Tecumseh Michigan in 2011– we then opened on Main Street in Ann Arbor in 2012 and have had stores in Detroit and Saline, Michigan in the meantime!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In retail, nothing is smooth– from location and staffing challenges to Covid, we’ve overcome a lot of adversity & proudly stand where we are today after a lot of hard work and grit. In a college town, turnover is always an issue– we changed our mindset about our ideal team & work tirelessly to continue to staff the store with a team that grows with us!

As you know, we’re big fans of Rock Paper Scissors . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Rock Paper Scissors is a stationery & gift store on Main Street in Ann Arbor. We offer unique and fun gifts and specialize in finding the perfect gift, snark and pop culture gifts. Love Taylor Swift? We’ve got a section for you. Love a well placed F bomb- we’ve got you covered! Looking for a unique kitchen gift? Look no further- we’ve got you taken care of. Additionally, we do custom wedding invitations and unique customized gifts like stationery and personalized charctuerie Boards making sure that gifting and celebrating are always uniquely personal to you!

From a brand stand point, I’m most proud of our authentic voice. We offer things we believe in, gifts from TV shows we can’t live with out (like Gilmore Girls and Friends), and humor on most things life. We work extremely hard to curate a unique collection, and to make the store a place you feel at home browsing for hours at end!
