Today we’d like to introduce you to Skylar Doherty
Hi Skylar, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Every family has a story, and ours starts with a dream and a bit of good timing. For several years, Joe and Julie—my fiancé, Anthony’s parents—had their eyes on a beautiful property in North East, Maryland. The property had stunning views of the Elk River and its dual life as a vineyard and wedding venue, it felt like the perfect fit for them. Actually a few years ago, they almost bought it, but the timing just wasn’t right. Life had other plans, and the opportunity slipped by—at least for the time being.
Fast forward to 2024. Anthony and I were living in Florida, both at a bit of a crossroads in our careers, when we decided to go back to Anthony’s home, Maryland. Then, almost like it was meant to be, the vineyard and venue popped back on the market. This time, everything fell into place. The four of us—Joe, Julie, Anthony, and I—decided to go all in and make it happen. We chased a dream together.
Flash-forward, here we are, running Blue Elk Vineyard and Bohemia Overlook as a family. These aren’t just places where people get married or sip wine—they’re places where memories are made. Whether it’s a couple’s big day, a community event, or just a quiet afternoon overlooking the vines, we’re so proud to be part of it all.
It has definitely been a wild ride, but we wouldn’t trade it for anything. It’s brought our family closer and given us a chance to share the magic of North East, Maryland, with everyone who visits.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a completely smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been stepping into an industry that none of us had prior experience in. We had to learn everything from scratch from the logisitics of running a vineyard to the intricate details of managing a wedding venue. On top of that, we faced the task of making these businesses feel like our own, ensuring they reflected our family’s vision and values. It’s been a steep learning curve, but every challenge has been a chance for growth, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see our hard work come to life.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Blue Elk Vineyard & Bohemia Overlook?
Our business is a family affair, we all work together. At Blue Elk Vineyard and Bohemia Overlook, we pride ourselves on creating unforgettable experiences, whether it’s a dream wedding, a community event, or a relaxing afternoon in the vineyard. What sets us apart is the personal touch we bring to everything we do.
Our property features three wedding venues; a beach venue, overlooking the Elk River, a barn venue, with an enchanting rustic feel, and our historic 1930’s manor house venue. There is a total of 80 acres, 14 acres of vineyard, complete with sprawling country, and waterfront views.
I manage marketing and special events, ensuring that our story and offerings reach the right audience while planning memorable occasions. I also give wedding tours, help on wedding days, and also manage the tasting room kitchen and handle inventory when needed. It’s all hands on deck in our family, and we each play a role in making the business run smoothly.
We specialize in stunning weddings, offering a delicious lineup of local wines, and community-centered events. Our vineyard and venue are known for their breathtaking views and warm, welcoming atmosphere. We want our guests to feel like they’re part of the family when they visit, and we’re proud of how much heart and effort we pour into everything we do.
Above all, we’re proud to share a space where people can celebrate, connect, and create memories that last a lifetime. It’s not just a business; it’s a labor of love.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
One thing we’d love to share is how much heart goes into everything we do. From the moment you step onto our property, whether it’s for a wedding, a wine tasting, or one of our community events, you become part of our story. Our family works hard to create spaces where people can come together, celebrate life’s big and small moments, and simply enjoy themselves.
We’re also passionate about supporting our local community. Whether it’s collaborating with local vendors, or hosting events that bring people together, we believe in being more than just a business we want to be a part of what makes North East, Maryland, so special.
If you’re considering a visit, know that we’re here to make your experience unforgettable. Come see the views, taste the wine, and let us help you create a moment to remember. We’d love to welcome you!
