Daily Inspiration: Meet Rebecca Miller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Miller

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Howdy there! I am a Michigan-based freelance illustrator and graphic designer. I first became fascinated with illustration and graphic design while in high school and honed my skills through the Fine Arts department at Alma College, in Alma, Michigan. While in college, I had the amazing opportunity to participate in the New York Arts Program (New York City) via Welcome Books and the boutique graphic design firm Studio Rappy. I fell in love with the interplay of effective design, marketing, and illustration. It was a blessing to create something with my hands each and every day.

After I graduated from college, I worked at different design studios & production companies to keep the creative juices flowing. Each year exposed me to fun, new, and exciting ways to illustrate and design. My work is inspired by my days spent in the library, out in nature, or in the print shop. Some of my biggest influences include pop culture, graphic novel art, letterpress, Red Rhino Glass & Print, naturalism, Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick’s ‘The Venture Bros.’ TV series, tattoo design, and tongue-in-cheek humor.

Currently, I’m proud to collaborate with clients big and small. I’ve also been soft-launching my new illustration print line via the local art and craft fair market this year (to exceptionally enthusiastic applause!). Nothing feels better than making people laugh, share a smile, and bring home a hand-crafted illustration to get inspired by! I am eternally grateful for all the support the art community, friends, and family has given along the way.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like any road, it is what you make of it. One that is a fantastic journey full of roadblocks, curves, ups, and downs. Some of the hardest struggles I’ve encountered have been blessings in disguise. Each are lessons in how to pivot, do better, experiment more, trust more, heal through community, and just do your thing.

When there was a roadblock or curve (we all get them!), I’d go back to the basics: Simplify the challenge, aim to accomplish smaller tasks to tally up & compound goals, and look through other lenses to problem-solve.

If it was an up or down, I’d understand it for what it is…. just a point in a larger, non-linear plan at work. If you can harness that mindset (be mindful of what’s going on and make it your friend), you can also find your way through it, too.

Lastly, there are people supporting you (big or small) all throughout the way (even behind the scenes or ones you haven’t met yet). Community can do wonders when it comes to rejuvenating, revitalizing, or re-energizing.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a freelance illustrator and graphic designer, I enjoy creating bespoke illustrations & designs that quickly captivate & engage the viewer. Each visual solution is tailored and one-of-kind.

I love creating illustration pieces that reflect my deep desire for humor, nature, and the creative imagination. Often my artwork revolves around whimsical creatures, visual storytelling, and clean linework. Currently, I work in traditional, hand-carved block printing, and digital mediums, however, I am always incorporating new techniques & skills to my creative toolbelt to explore storytelling.

What sets me apart is my unique ability to get to know the client inside and out. It’s like you have a best friend who’s rooting for you from day one! From discovery to design & positioning, I enjoy creating memorable, strong identities, and exciting strategies. Customer service has always been in my background and I cheerfully enjoy making the process as smooth as possible.

Everyday, I am proud of where I come from and grateful to those that have been supporters of my craft throughout the years. Being part of a rich artistic community has helped me and I enjoy giving back to keep the creative momentum going. When I am not working on a project or hiking a local Michigan park, you’ll find me enjoying artist collective meet-ups and supporting local artists.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is meant to be shared. Be it in authentic creative action, educational appetite, and giving back in meaningful ways. Sometimes it shows up as a smooth year of boundless creativity and clients. Other times it shows up as the morning you get a chance to be interviewed for a really great organization that you admire.
