Today we’d like to introduce you to Hela Ben Aoun

Hi Hela, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a self taught baker and actually started my career as a fashion designer. I took a few years off to raise my children, particularly my son with Autism. Fast forward to a few years later, I started finding my creative outlet again through baking. I was able to combine my artistic background and self taught baking skills to create custom cakes for family and friends, to eventually starting my own home operated business, Cakes By Hela LLC in 2020.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My family and I lived in Windsor, ON for the past 20 years and moved to Rochester Hills, MI in 2020, in order for my son to have a continued education and job support. Therefore, starting my own business in a place I had just moved to, with no friends and family, made it a struggle to build a clientele. Thankfully, with referrals from returning clients, I have been able to grow steadily.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a cake decorator/artist and specialize in producing custom cakes and cookies for any special occasion. All of my creations are made from scratch with high quality, natural ingredients, which is a standard I highly believe in. With every creation, I challenge myself to make as many aspects of the decor edible, and handmade.

I provide full support for all my clients, making myself available for any questions or consultations throughout the whole cake ordering process. My clients and I work alongside each other to take their idea(s) and make it come alive into their custom creation!
